As the name suggests, this carnation grows in the heath. You can also plant the heather carnation in the garden. We explain how it works.
The wild pink blooming pink carnation was voted "Flower of the Year 2012" by the Nature Conservation Foundation, which is intended to give it very special attention. Why? Because the actually quite robust heather carnation in the wild is unfortunately very much threatened with extinction. So do something for the protection of species and plant the heather carnation in your garden!
The right location for the heather carnation
Hardwood pinks do particularly well in rock gardens, where they can spread luxuriantly as ground cover. The flower, which grows to a height of around 20 to 30 centimetres, is also suitable for planting in beds in sunny locations. This type of flower then mainly prefers acidic, preferably sandy, dry soils that cannot form any waterlogging.
Hint:
Heath carnations are now available in specialist shops in different flower colours, some even with double flowers.
Sowing the Horse Carnation Seed
The sowing of the heather carnation seed takes place either as early as February in the flower pot on the window sill or in the flower bed directly after the frosty days. It is quite sufficient if you scatter the seeds as thinly as possible, as the little plants will quickly spread in all directions.
Hint:
Due to its scarce water requirements, the heather carnation is also ideal for planting on green roof areas.
Care for heather carnations
➥ Casting:
Heathherbs need almost no care at all. As a rule, they even survive long periods of drought without damage. However, they should be sprinkled minimally as early as possible on particularly hot days.
➥ Pruning:
Only when the flowers of the perennial plants have withered after a few weeks can you cut back the pink carnation for a nicer garden look. With one-year-old heather carnation varieties, pruning is of course unnecessary.
Warning:
Don't cut back faded heather carnations right away, then the seeds that form can becomeensure fresh growth in the coming spring!
➥ Propagation:
Heathherbs can be easily propagated in spring by dividing the perennials. Simply cut off part of the perennial with a spade and plant it somewhere else.
