Origin and characteristics
This apple variety was created by crossing "Vanda" and "Rubin". Targeted breeding was carried out at the Institute for Experimental Botany in Prague. The apple variety has been officially protected throughout the EU since 1998. Propagation for commercial reasons is only possible for a fee. Likewise, the owner of the variety must be asked for permission if commercial breeding is to take place.
The Apple Topaz is an allergy-friendly apple variety. The apple allergen "Mal d1" only occurs in low concentrations. Apple allergies are usually complex. Therefore, allergy sufferers should first try carefully whether they can safely consume this variety.
Flavour and characteristics
The medium-sized fruits are rather flat and up to 70 percent are striped and flamed dark red. Some fruit lovers are bothered by the thick skin, which often seems a hindrance when eating.
» Tip: After a certain maturation period, the skin appears greasy and less hard. The firm flesh becomes softer and sweeter.
The apples taste particularly aromatic and have a good balance between sweetness and acidity. A hallmark ofApple variety "Topaz" are so-called "meat pearls". You can see these flesh growths in the calyx of the fruit.
Apple 'Topaz' - cultivation and care

The base used is decisive for the growth of the trees. If a slow-growing rootstock (M27) was used, the "Topaz" apple is even suitable as a container plant. A medium-sized fruit tree will grow relatively quickly in your garden with rootstocks of medium vigorous growth (M7).
The apple tree delights with a rich bloom that can begin early. There is therefore a risk of damage from late frosts.
» Note: This apple variety does less well in harsh and humid regions, as wood frost can occur.
Wet and heavy soils, which lead to a build-up of moisture, are also unsuitable for cultivation. Ideally, the Topaz apple should be cultivated in loose and well-drained soil with a high humus content.
As a scab-resistant variety, "Topaz" is reliably protected against most apple tree diseases. Only the apple aphid, the fruit tree spider mite and occasionally mildew can pose a threat to this fruit tree variety.
Harvesting and Using Apple Topaz

Because it is a very tasty apple variety, direct consumption of the apples is favoured. Hobby gardeners can usually expect a rich harvest. It is therefore advisable to process the apples further, for example to make apple juice, applesauce, apple compote or cakes and pastries.
