Pansies are among the first flowers to bloom in the garden. But to do that, you need to get them through the winter well.

After a long, cold winter, the heart of many hobby gardeners beats a little faster when they see the first flowers in the garden. No wonder, because this is usually a sure sign that the cold, dark season is finally over. One of the flowers that herald spring are pansies. These are available in countless variations and shades of color, which is why they are particularly popular with us. In order for you to be able to enjoy this bloom every year, you have to protect the pansies well. This is the only way for them to survive the winter without any problems and reliably ensure the first flowers in spring.

How to overwinter pansies correctly

Pansies in the bed

Pansies are strong and durable. They are also frost hardy and, with a little protection, can withstand extreme cold down to -10°C. If there are pansies in the bed, you can cover them with some brushwood or garden fleece as a precaution. Additional winter protection is usually not necessary. By the way, you don't have to worry if the pansies curl up their leaves - curling up protects the plant from frost.

Pansies in balcony box/pot

If you want to overwinter the pansies in the window box or in the pot, that's no problem either. Simply protect the pansies in the pot in moderate cold with some fleece. However, if it gets really cold outside, then you have to bring the planters inside, otherwise the roots in the pot could freeze.

» Important: You must also not forget to water in winter, otherwise the plants will dry out. Moderate but regular is the motto.
