The sweet pea is a unique climbing plant that almost looks like a pea plant without flowers. However, when the beautiful butterfly flowers appear in June, nobody thinks that the plant is a pea. They are very decorative and last a long time if you follow a few tips. We would therefore like to give you four tips on how to care for your sweet peas.
Caring for sweet peas - 4 tips
- Compost helps plants last longer. When two-thirds of the sweet pea flowers have withered, start mounding the plants with compost. The nutrients supply the plant, which develops new roots and shoots and also becomes stronger. This also reduces mildew infestation.
- Always cut off dead flowers immediately. Do not only remove the flowers, but also the shoot tips. This stimulates new growth and the plant flowers many weeks longer and of course more luxuriantly.
- It is also permitted to regularly cut shoots for the vase. This also stimulates the formation of new flowers.
- You can also let a few fruits ripen at the same time. By the fall, seeds will have emerged that you can then sow. If you do that, you can look forward to new sweet peas next year.
