We've all seen a large tree with ivy or some other climbing plant overgrown with bark, often reaching up to the crown of the tree. This looks very nice, but not all climbing plants on trees are suitable.
Because the tree can suffer. That's why you don't have to do without tree cover. It's possible if you get the right plants.
These plants are not suitable because they take away the air and light from the trees and dig their roots under the bark:
- Ivy
- Stitch Shrike
- Rambler Roses
- Wisteria
- Knotweed
There are no problems with:
- Clematis
- Climbing Roses
- Honeysuckle.
If a creeper is overgrown with something dense, you should refrain from letting these plants climb up trees. As a result, the tree can suffer and, in the worst case, even die. Let extreme climbers rather climb up fences or the house wall.
