A small snack garden offers a colorful and delicious alternative to the flower bed. There are even alternatives for the balcony or terrace.

Here a small strawberry and there a few berries from the bush - who didn't like to eat the different fruits as a small child? And then there was trouble because there weren't enough strawberries for Mama's strawberry cake or the raspberry bush was eaten completely empty again.

But just because we're not kids anymore doesn't mean we don't still love to snack. On the contrary, even as adults we are happy when the fruit is finally ripe and we can let it disappear in our mouths.

It's perfect if you have a small snack garden for just that. Our tips will tell you how to create and plant one.

Choosing the right location

A lot of fruit and vegetables should thrive in the snack garden, so it is important that you choose a spot that is as sunny as possible. This does not necessarily have to be the bed outside in the garden. If you only have a terrace or a balcony, you can also create a small snack garden here. A lot of sun, nutrient-rich soil, water and the right plants are crucial for a rich harvest.

What plants in the kitchen garden?

What fruits and vegetables you plant in your garden is entirely up to you. Anything that pleases and, above all, tastes good is allowed. The big advantage of snack gardens is that you can plant a colorful variety, since the yield does not have to be enough for cakes or meals. Maybe you will find one or the other variety that is worth planting in the big bed.

Selection of plants for everyday enjoyment

➢ Vegetables

Whether on the balcony, terrace or bed - seeds for mini vegetables are particularly suitable for a snack garden. Cucumbers, tomatoes, carrots, courgettes, aubergines - all varieties can also be found in small versions (see e.g. mini cucumbers). Extremely practical for a snack garden. Harvest and put it in your mouth. Radishes, peas, peppers and chard are also ideal for a snack garden.

You will find a colorful variety of small vegetablesfor example at the Pötschke nursery. I have often ordered seeds and young plants here and can recommend the shop unreservedly.

» Tip: If you overseed regularly, you will have fresh and crunchy vegetables to nibble on all summer long.

➢ Fruit

When it comes to fruit varieties, you should choose varieties that grow tall. You can save a lot of space, especially on a terrace or balcony. You can also try and plant a few more varieties here.

Cherries, red currants, apples, raspberries and of course the delicious strawberries are highly recommended for a snack garden. It is best to use monthly strawberries here (available from BALDUR-Garten, for example). These provide fresh fruit all summer long.

You see, you are spoiled for choice when it comes to fruit. It is advisable to grow plants where you can see quick success and have something to snack on regularly.

Pillar fruit is also good for a snack garden. You will find this in abundance at the Pötschke nursery. There is guaranteed to be something for every sweet tooth.

Pillar fruit should be well cared for. Read the article Tips for caring for columnar fruit.

➢ Herbs

In addition to crunchy vegetables and fresh fruit, certain herbs should not be missing in a snack garden. Cress, for example, grows extremely quickly and is particularly suitable for salad dressings. Chives and basil can also be planted quickly and easily and are particularly popular in summer.

Create bed

Spring is the best time to start sowing and planting. The earth isn't that cold anymore, but it's still nice and moist so that the plants can develop well.

Step 1: Once you have found a suitable location, you should first clear the bed of annoying weeds. Also loosen the soil well.

Step 2: Now you can sow the individual seeds. Pay attention to the different sowing depths of the plants. Light germinators can only thrive if they get enough light. Dark germs, on the other hand, require complete darkness.

By the way: You can get children excited about gardening with small beds like this. The only important thing here is that you really only choose plants that bear fruit quickly. After all, children want to be fastsee positive results, otherwise they quickly lose interest.

» Tip: You can also plant many types of vegetables in a raised bed. This has two main advantages. On the one hand, you protect your back while gardening and, on the other hand, raised beds are not as susceptible to pests such as snails. So you make your work easier and you can also look forward to a higher yield.

What should not be missing in any snack garden

You can stay in such a small snack garden for quite some time, especially if you eat the harvest with children. So that the whole thing is also cozy, we recommend placing a garden bench between the treats. Here you can sit down in peace and eat the individual delicacies.
