Gardening is a lot easier with the right spade. But what should you look out for when buying a spade?
Rakes, hedge trimmers, lawnmowers - these are just a few of the many devices that a garden owner should definitely call his own. Of course, the garden spade should not be missing either, because with this device you can easily dig planting holes for berries, fruit trees, bushes and the like in almost any soil. An absolute must-have for every garden owner.
In the meantime, there are countless spade models to choose from in the specialist market, ranging from cheap spades to luxury stainless steel models. But don't just look at looks! What use is a fancy luxury spade if it is unwieldy and heavy? Our tips should show you what you should look out for when buying a garden spade.
One thing in advance: Some people find folding spades very practical and tend to grab them, but such a spade is only good for transport and less for everyday gardening. You should only get a folding spade if you only want to do small jobs with it.
Tips for model and material selection
» Tip 1 - Select stem shape:
You should choose the spade handle with either the usual T-handle or a knob (depending on your personal preference). With the T-handle, however, more pressure can usually be exerted on the spade blade.
» Tip 2 - Select handle material:
The handle of the spade is mainly made of robust wood, rarely made of plastic. Metal handles, on the other hand, are much more stable, but often also much heavier. In addition, you can replace wooden handles at any time at low cost if they break.
» Tip 3 - Plastic coating/padding on the handle:
A plastic cover on the handle allows for a better and, above all, more comfortable grip. Some of the handles are even offered with comfortable padding. Keep an eye out for it.
» Tip 4 - Select spade blade material:
Spade blades made of stainless steel are expensive to buy, but they no longer rust. If you choose a conventional metal sheetIf you decide and rub it again with oil after cleaning, it is also protected against corrosion.
Additional tip: Clean the spade immediately after each use, dry it and store it in a protected storage place (e.g. in the equipment room).
» Tip 5 - Choose the size of the spade blade:
The size differentiation of the spade blades depends on the prevailing soil thickness on site. The heavier the soil to be worked, the smaller the spade blade should be. Loose, sandy soils, on the other hand, can also be worked well with larger spade blades.
The upper edge of the spade blade should also be wide enough so that you can significantly increase the power of the spade with a kick.
» Tip 6 - Connection between spade blade and style:
When buying, make sure that the spade blade and handle are connected with a screw. This makes the handle easier to replace.
