It's no secret that the moon has a powerful influence on all life on earth. The moon also plays a role in gardening.
The basic prerequisite is the realization that not only the phases of the moon alone have an influence on the gardening success, but also that the connections between the positions of the moon and the signs of the zodiac play an important role. Basically, the full moon always has a positive influence on the growth of all plants. To give you a better understanding, we would like to give you a little basic knowledge about gardening with the moon and explain how the moon influences the garden and how you should garden with the moon effectively.
Moon phases and moon positions
Today, people distinguish between phases of the moon. One speaks regularly of four phases, which are passed through in a cycle of 28 days:- New moon - popularly known as the half moon
- Waxing Moon
- Full Moon
- Waning Moon
Here one distinguishes between two different positions of the moon (ascending and descending).
Zodiac Signs and Elements
In addition, we also distinguish between 12 signs of the zodiac (star signs), which in turn are assigned to the elements fire, water, air and earth:- Earth Signs: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn=Root Days and Bulb Days
- Air signs: Libra, Aquarius, Gemini=days of flowering and days of growth
- Water signs: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces=leaf days, watering and fertilizing
- Fire signs: Sagittarius, Leo, Aries=fertile days (procreation) and promoting maturity
Gardening with the moon - How it works
Sowing, reaping, weeding, etc. - everything depends on the right time for it to be successful in the end. You can get special lunar calendars on the market that tell you what gardening work you should do on which day. With this knowledge you can easily work according to the positions of the moon in the future. While this may sound a little strange to many who have not heard of gardening with the moon, you will see that your plants can benefit a lotgrow better and your harvest will be much more profitable.Just follow the lunar rules below and be amazed at how well your plants will thrive.
- It's best to harvest herbs only when the moon is full, which is when they can develop their greatest healing powers.
- Trees and shrubs are generally pruned at the new moon.
- A pale, slightly yellow moon indicates rain - then you should have the rain barrels ready.
- You can repot and transplant plants as the moon is waxing.
- You should never water your indoor plants on flowering days. Then you don't have to worry about pest infestation.
- Fire sign days are fruit days on which plant care is fertile or is particularly well received by the plants.
- The harvest of stored crops that thrive above ground (e.g. fruit trees) should always be done when the moon is rising, preferably in the days from Sagittarius to Gemini. Except for the harvest on Fish Days, these should always be eaten immediately.
- Rooted plants should always be harvested during the waning moon.
- Mow the lawn at new moon and it grows back much faster at full moon, much slower but thicker.
- You should also take into account that the sap goes into the plants when the moon is waxing and in the roots when the moon is waning. This in turn means that you should sow climbing plants when the moon is waxing and ground crops like kohlrabi and carrots when the moon is waning.
» Tip:
Special garden moon calendars are available in specialist shops and on the Internet, which provide helpful instructions for every day in the garden. But you can also find plenty of books on the subject of gardening with the moon on the Internet.
For example, I can recommend the book Gardening according to the moon with Maria Thun: Sowing days, planting times, harvest days. Because Maria Thun is the grande dame of sowing days. For about 50 years she has been working intensively on how every gardener can grow, care for and harvest more successful plants with the help of the moon and planets.
