Propagation pots are ideal for growing plants. However, you can also use cheaper alternatives for this.

In order to put some strong plants in the ground in May, it is best to plant them between February and March. You can easily make the growing pots you need yourself.

Often you already have the necessary materials for the production of a seed pot at home. The practical thing is that most of them, like the commercially available version, can simply be placed in the ground later. Particularly suitable for this is:

  • Newspaper
  • Egg Packs
  • Toilet Paper Rolls
  • Egg Shells

Each of the above materials should, however, be properly prepared to provide the plants with optimal growing conditions.

» Newsprint Pots

While in the past the printer's ink harmed the plants, it no longer contains any heavy metals. Newspaper is therefore ideal for attracting plants. The best way to do this is as follows:

StepExplanation
Step 1Quarter the newspaper page and fold it twice lengthways
Step 2 Roll strips around a s alt or pepper shaker, alternatively around an empty toilet roll
Step 3fold one side of the roll so that the potty is stable
Step 4 Remove the s alt or pepper shaker or the toilet roll from the middle

The newspaper will later rot in the soil when the plants are planted with the pot in the ground.

» Dressing in Empty Egg Cases

Empty egg packaging offers optimal conditions, especially for the plants, whose distances later only have to be small. Because then the complete package can be planted when the grown plants are ready. Important: The egg packaging should not be coloured, otherwise the colored particles can transfer to the plant.

In order to use the egg packaging accordingly, simply use theLid removed from bottom of package. Then you only have to fill in the potting soil and you can sow.

If the plants require a greater distance when they are planted, simply separate the respective compartments and plant them individually.

» Use toilet paper rolls

Toilet paper rolls are the right size for planting from the start. To use them as seed pots, first cut them in half. The cardboard tube is then pressed flat so that there are creases on the sides. Do the same again in the other direction so that there are four creases on the sides at the end.

Now use scissors to cut each of these creases about an inch deep. The resulting corners are folded inward and interlocked like an ordinary cardboard box. You can then fill the rollers with soil and start sowing.

» Use egg shells

Even an empty breakfast egg can be used as a seed pot if it is still stable enough. Ideally, they should also be kept in the egg carton.

In contrast to the egg carton, the great advantage of this variant is that the individual plants do not have to be separated from each other with scissors beforehand.

More Ways to Wear

In addition to the options already mentioned, there are others that require the transplanting of individual seedlings. But they are also made from raw materials that would normally have been thrown away:

  • Fruit and Vegetable Packaging
  • Empty Tetra Paks
  • tins
  • Empty Plastic Bottles

They also require appropriate pre-treatment in order to use them effectively for donning.

» Use tin cans

At best, canned foods are pre-dressed with a can opener, creating a blunt edge, for dressing. In this way, possible injuries are avoided.

In order to use the can to wear it, holes are then pierced in the bottom with a nail. Alternatively, you can use a metal drill.

For example, the cans are ideal for growing larger seeds.

» Fruit and vegetable packaging

Most of these transparent packaging have another advantage in addition to the larger space available: thanks to the lid, in whichideally there are already a few holes, they can be used perfectly as an indoor greenhouse.

If there is a sticker on the lid, remove it with a little oil or water beforehand. Then you simply fill the container with potting soil and plant the seeds. The lid is closed again afterwards.

» Tetra packs and plastic bottles

In order to create optimal conditions for the later plants in these containers, they are cut in half in the first step. The lower part is used for planting and should be drilled with a few holes at the bottom.

The upper part, on the other hand, can be used very well to offer the plants a little more warmth. If necessary, you simply place it on the lower part like a lid. The necessary ventilation is provided via the pouring hole, which can be opened and closed again as required.

Warning: Only plants that do not need a lot of light to grow should be sown in the tetra packs.
