If you want to propagate vines, that's basically no problem. However, there are laws that strictly regulate propagation.

In Germany, vines may only be grafted on substrates that are resistant to phylloxera. Ungrafted plants should therefore not be planted out. And you should definitely stick to this, because if you don't do that, you have to reckon with a very high fine! Planting plants that are not resistant to phylloxera in wine-growing regions can have fatal consequences. And you certainly don't want to be responsible for that.

New breeds are phylloxera resistant

Grape vines can be propagated either by offshoots or cuttings. On the other hand, you should not dare to multiply with seedlings, because they often split extremely. Propagation via cuttings is generally the best method, because special specialist companies use cumbersome methods to grow cuttings in order to get the problem with phylloxera under control to some extent.

For example, European and American varieties are now being crossed with each other. This is because European vines do not have phylloxera on the leaves, while American vines do not have phylloxera on the roots. Targeted breeding aims to combine these two positive aspects and obtain varieties that are as resistant to phylloxera as possible. So the shoots of the European varieties are grafted onto the woody shoots of the American varieties.

In the following days you must always make sure that you keep the soil evenly moist. The cuttings should then root very quickly. By fall the roots should be good enough to move the plants to the garden.
