Diseases and pests on pome fruit
Certain diseases and pests can affect plants negatively. So that you know how to combat them, we would like to introduce you to the 5 most common diseases and pests on pome fruit and their methods of combating them:
- Apple scab: Brown to gray spots on the leaves are the first signs of this fungal disease. Fruits are then attacked and develop dark spots and cracks. Tree canopies should be trimmed regularly to let in more light and air. Slightly infected apples can still be eaten, you just have to cut out the affected parts.
- Blood Lice: The red lice nest in wounds on the bark and settle there. Lice's saliva can cause aphid cancer on the tree. You should therefore check your trees regularly and remove infested twigs and branches.
- Codling moth: White caterpillars eat through the fruit and leave droppings. Fallen fruit should be destroyed promptly. You should put strips of corrugated cardboard around the trunk of the tree and destroy it in the fall because that's where the pests nest.
- Sawfly: The wasp larvae burrow into the fruit and hatch there. You must destroy affected fruits. White traps prevent infestation next year.
- Apple Powdery Mildew: The leaves are covered with a white coating up to the tips of the shoots. The shoots turn brown and die. Infested shoots must be removed and disposed of. Better plant hardy varieties.
