Graves don't always have to be planted with pansies. You can also embellish it with grass, for example. It just depends on the right varieties.
It doesn't always have to be the typical grave plants. With a balanced grass planting, the grave becomes a place of rest and reflection. Types that differ in height and structure are particularly suitable. This creates a pleasant, peaceful image. You can even work with different colors. Another plus: most ornamental grasses require little care.
Stylish grave planting with grasses
You basically have several options when designing a grave with grass. For example, you can plant individual grassy shrubs and combine them with groundcover, gravel or flowering plants.
The second variant is a complete planting of the grave area with grass. In this case it is important that the grasses are of different heights.
Ornamental grasses come in many different shapes and colours. The filigree blades of grass and the various flowers ensure a lively and yet contemplative and calm grave design. Many grasses even flower from summer to autumn. But there is also a nice picture in winter. Namely when there is hoarfrost on the blades of grass. The only important thing when choosing the grasses is that you do not select any vigorously growing varieties. The grasses should not spread beyond the grave. Also, hardy varieties are generally best suited for grave planting.
The most beautiful grasses for grave design
» pampas grass:
The tall pampas grass is a dominant variety that is best shown on a double dig. The perennial can grow up to a meter tall and boasts silvery-white or pink fronds of flowers.
» Fescue species:
Also a nice eye-catcher, but shorter in stature: the fescue species bearskin fescue, atlas fescue and blue fescue. They grow in a spherical shape and offer multiple shades of gray-green-blue.
» Pennisetum:
The pennisetum grass is another oneattractive grass species. It forms impressive flowers from August to October. These spike-shaped, light-colored inflorescences are also what give the grass its name.
» Reddish grasses:
Red grasses make a welcome change when planting with grasses. Mahogany grass, red love grass and red-green Chinese reed come into their own here. The Chinese reed is available in many other variants. However, always pay attention to varieties that remain small, so that the reeds do not disturb the overall design.
Our tip:
After planting the grass bushes, soil always remains visible between the plants in the first year. Simply fill in the gaps with bark mulch. This results in a well-groomed image right from the start.
How to properly care for the grass
Grasses prefer loose, humus-rich to sandy soil in which they can grow well. Once this is done, further care is limited. After the winter, all you have to do is remove the dead plant parts and cut back the grass bushes. In the spring and summer, occasional fertilizing makes sense. However, you only need to water regularly if the summer is very hot and dry.
