More and more works of art are being made from Euro pallets. In this way, a space-saving herb bed can be created in just a few steps.
Whether seating furniture, pools, raised beds, tables or composters - with a little creativity, many useful things can be conjured up from Euro pallets. So it is not surprising that a herb bed made of Euro pallets is relatively easy to build.
And if you're thinking this is only for experienced craftsmen, I can reassure you. Because the garden art from the Euro pallet is absolutely no work of art and you have to prepare it yourself, even if you think you have two left hands. Namely, you can use the palettes in several ways.
Since you are probably hoping for a space-saving solution, we will deal with a very simple variant: the upright Euro pallet.
Build a herb bed from Euro pallets - Here's how
Before you start crafting, you should first have the necessary utensils ready. These include:
- Euro pallet (or a non-standard pallet of a similar design)
- Impact Wrench
- pond liner
- Narrow wooden slats
- Gravel
- Earth
- Pointed hammer
- Measure Tape
Step 1: Remove excess slats from the euro pallet
In the first step, you partially destroy the Euro pallet: In order to be able to plant properly later on, it is necessary to lever off the second longitudinal slat. Once you have removed these, only the two outer slats and the middle slat should remain, which run exactly over the slats on the back of the Euro pallet.» Tip: Be careful not to break the slats. You can easily reuse the wooden slat by cutting it to size. In this way, the removed slats replace the narrow wooden slats.
Step 2: Build base for the euro pallet
Once freed from superfluous slats, the euro pallet needs a wider base. Since the herb bed will stand upright in our case, it must be stabilized in the ground area. You have two options:
- You usethe removed slats
- You use previously purchased wooden slats
It's cheap and easy if you choose the first option. Mark a section of about fifty centimeters on the board and saw it in two. Now use weatherproof screws to screw the feet directly onto the edge block that describes the cavity of the Euro pallet. Now you can turn the pallet over and you will see that it is very stable. If the boards break when you lever them, you have to make the feet out of fresh wooden slats.
Step 3: Create planting areas in the Euro pallet
The next step is to build
Planting areas in the Euro pallet. You can also use the boards you removed for this.
- In the first step, measure the distance between the two outer square timbers and the stabilizing center piece.
- Cut the support boards to this length and screw to the longitudinal slats from below.
- Repeat the step until you have boarded each side of the Euro pallet and each plant tier.
The basic structure of your herb bed is now complete. At this point you can already plant the Euro pallet by placing flower pots with saucers or matching flower boxes in the planting sections.
Step 4: Line the planting areas in the Euro pallet with foil
But you also have the option of expanding the range even further and thus doing without the pots: with pond liner.
Pond liner is available in different strengths. We recommend the thickest possible liner, which is usually used for ponds in stony soil. The film is very stable and tear-resistant, but can be processed very well.
-
- Line each planting section with pond liner. To keep the soil from getting caught in the folds, hide the folds on the back of the foil.
- For strength, attach the film to the wood with a wooden staple.
- If you want a more stable variant, you can use a PVC floor. You can often buy offcuts very cheaply in hardware stores.
- You need a very simple floor that has no insulation whatsoever. PVC flooring, while pliable, is difficult to lay in its normal state so that you can properly line the corners.
» My tip: To make the material more flexible, you simply need heat. A standard hair dryer is sufficient herealready over.
» The alternative: Place a piece of PVC soil in the planting section and measure where the corners are.
- Now cut the bottom in this area with a carpet knife, fold the section and glue it on the back. Use the hair dryer as a tool to bend the bends.
- Place your PVC floor box in the planting section. Since the corners are not absolutely tight, seal them with additional silicone. Of course you can fasten the box with a wooden tacker. If you don't, you can remove and clean it regularly.
Step 5: Enhance the look of the Euro pallet
Since used Euro pallets are often no longer visually attractive, but you want a pretty herb bed, you can now let off steam creatively. Use waterproof spray paint if you prefer a quick fix. Or sand down the pallet to get an even surface. Now you can varnish, paint or otherwise decorate them.» Tip: Do you tend to forget what you planted where? Then look for blackboard discs from the handicraft supply store or buy blackboard foil. Thin foil can be cut out into shapes and decoratively glued to the longitudinal slats.
Your herb bed from a Euro pallet is now complete and ready for planting. First put a narrow layer of gravel in the flower boxes or plant sections to prevent waterlogging.

Tips for more experienced hobbyists
You like herbs, but watering isn't exactly your best friend? Then you can help yourself with a little trick. All you have to do is drill a hole in each planting section. Choose a side so the holes are on the right side of each planting section, for example.
Before adding gravel and soil to the sections, thread a chain through the hole and secure with a small nail. Likewise, raise one side of the feet by one centimeter. Here it is important that the stand is lower on the side where the holes are located. The pallet will not be exactly horizontal later.
What are the drill holes and chains for? Very easily. If you split the herbs nowplant according to their water requirements, you only need to water the upper section vigorously. The excess water flows through the holes into the lower plant compartments and waters the plants there directly. The chains prevent the water from splashing ugly.
» Tip: If you choose this option, herbs that require more water are placed in the top compartments. At the bottom, plant herbs that require little moisture.
You can of course not only plant herbs in the Euro pallet. The upright bed is also suitable for vegetables, balcony flowers and seedlings.
