Weeds in pavement joints look ugly and can even lift the stones. Regular cleaning is a must, but it becomes easier with my tips.
It has not only happened once that visitors enter our property and give us enviable looks because of the size. Yes, it's true, what we've created over the last few years is quite impressive, but it also takes a lot of work! After I recently gave you a few tips on how to remove moss and green growth from your terrace, today we will dedicate ourselves to the driveway and all other paved areas. It annoys me enormously when I come home from work, open the gate and a carpet of moss and weeds awaits me, neatly distributed between the joints of the paved driveway. you know that? Then you've come to the right place.
Clean paving joints by hand
Whether you own a garden or a house, most work is still done by hand. In principle, it is also a nice balance to the job, as long as it stays in moderation. Pulling weeds out of the pavement joints is certainly one of the less pleasant things.» Scrape joints without bending down «
I don't know how you've de alt with the "plague of weeds" so far. I made my first attempts with a sharp knife from my household. I was able to throw it away afterwards.
Meanwhile I own a real joint scraper, with which I am also very satisfied. The small models, which are between 20 and 30 cm long, do their job, but literally bring you to your knees. ? My choice therefore fell on a joint scraper that you can simply put on a normal broomstick (see fugenfitch.com). So I can work standing up and the result is great. Since I rarely film myself at work, here's a sample video so you know what I mean.

Remove weeds in paving joints with gas
To pluck annoying weedsTo save, large areas in the garden are simply covered with bark mulch. Of course, this is not possible on cobblestones. Alternatively, you can use gas to clean the joints. That sounds dangerous, but it's not and it's also more ecological than the chemical club. The weeds are simply burned by the weed burner (see weed burner article). However, only superficially. Roots remain between the joints and eventually sprout again. This variant of removing weeds from the paving joints is also somewhat more expensive, since a gas bottle is required in addition to the gas burner. When you are finished with the area, the flamed weeds only have to be swept away and what remains is a (for the time being) clean driveway. If you don't get used to the gas burner variant, an electric joint cleaner is the better choice.
Clean paving joints with high pressure
Everyone has to decide for themselves whether the purchase of a high-pressure cleaner is worthwhile. In the long run, it can make sense, because it not only cleans paved driveways, but also your garden furniture and even the moss-covered house wall. I don't use the Kärcher that often because the "mess" afterwards is always too big for me. Yes, it's true, you can also use the power of the high-pressure cleaner to clean paving joints, but it also takes some time for the water used to seep into the ground and the driveway to be dry again.A clear plus point for the high-pressure cleaner: you kill two birds with one stone. Due to the precise jet, the entire force acts in the joints and thus “lifts” the weeds. Thanks to a special attachment (see also the test report on renovieren.de), the paving stones can then be "polished" themselves.
Finally, the joints are freed from weeds, as with the gas burner, but only superficially and thus temporarily. The joint scraper variant presented first is more effective in the long run.
Potato water: natural herbicide
No matter which "tool" you use to clean your pavement joints, at some point the unpopular green will come through again. If you discover small spots, you can fight the weeds with normal potato water. It is important that the water is still hot and s alted. Then pour directly onto the affected joints and leave it that way. The s alt and the high temperature are "poison" for the weeds, but their paved driveway doesn't mind.
