A natural swimming pond will never be completely free of algae. Nevertheless, you should fight the algae in the swimming pond. Here are 6 tips.
In a freshly created swimming pond, increased algae formation is always to be expected at the beginning. However, this algae load in the pond can be greatly reduced over the years - as long as you follow our tips. Algae will never disappear completely, but with our tips, the algae load in the swimming pond can be minimized to such an extent that it is ultimately hardly noticeable.
Algae control in the swimming pond
Tip 1 - remove nutrients from the swimming pond:
In principle, every swimming pond should be kept as low in nutrients as possible in order to curb the growth of algae from the ground up. Because algae are living beings and feed on all the nutrients offered to them in the swimming pond.
For this purpose, you should divide your swimming pond into a regeneration area and a bathing area, which you can conveniently provide with a natural gravel filter in the transition area - this allows floating particles to be optimally filtered. Of course you can also use any other biological filter system in your swimming pond instead of the natural gravel filter.
Tip 2 - generously shade the swimming pond:
Light and warmth ensure increased formation of algae. Generous shading counteracts this, e.g. through sensible planting with water lilies, reed plants and similar plants.
Or you can stretch out an awning for partial shading on hot days. Trees, on the other hand, are not advisable, as leaves often get into the swimming pond and thus unintentionally supply nutrients.
Tip 3 - Clean the swimming pond regularly:
A swimming pond should also be cleaned regularly with a mud vacuum cleaner, at least 2 to 3 times a year, more often if necessary. For this purpose, you can also rent high-performance mud vacuums from specialist shops.
Tip 4 - Plant the swimming pond properly:
There are numerous plants available in garden stores today that can easily extract nutrients from a swimming pond. These include cattails, calamusand pike weed.
In this context, you must ensure that you only ever use a fertilizer that is as phosphate-free as possible for swimming pond plants and only settle them in the regeneration area of your pond. Before you create a swimming pond, it is best to make a plan where to plant which pond plants.
Tip 5 - avoid cracks in the swimming pond:
Algae likes to settle in the smallest cracks in a swimming pond, which is why you have to make sure you either avoid cracks completely (e.g. in bricks) or clean existing cracks more often.
Tip 6 - Use effective microorganisms:
Effective microorganisms (e.g. available from Amazon) biologically combat the formation of algae in the swimming pond. This type of pond care can even be used with fish stock without any problems.
