Some call it double garden jasmine, others call it mock orange. In the end, however, we are always talking about the same wonderfully fragrant ornamental shrub.
The double garden jasmine is one of the most popular ornamental shrubs in the garden and is also known under the names mock orange, summer jasmine and farmer's jasmine. In June and July it bears delicate white, double flowers that are held together in dense racemes. The great thing: the flowers spread a wonderfully fruity, intense scent. The leaves, on the other hand, are a beautiful dark green, heavily veined and jagged at the edges. In autumn the foliage turns yellow before being shed.

- Species: Eurasian Magnolia Tree
- Botanical name: Philadelphus coronarius
Growth behavior of the garden jasmine
The garden jasmine grows upright and loose and can reach a height of two to three meters and a width of one and a half to two meters. The growth is 30 to 40 centimeters per year. The branches are always slightly overhanging and need plenty of room to develop.
The mock orange tree is effective as a solitary plant. You can also easily plant it as a hedge. Then plant one or two plants per meter. The farmer's jasmine also complements a mixed flowering hedge well. Reading tip: Creating flowering hedges - That's how it's done.
Location and soil conditions
The mock orange tree thrives in both sun and semi-shade. In shady locations, however, the shrub grows more sparsely and bears fewer flowers. However, the undemanding double garden jasmine generally gets along with a normal, loose and nutrient-rich soil. Poor in nutrients and very firm soils are not suitable. The farmer's jasmine is insensitive to wind. Since the shrub is hardy, no frost protection is necessary.
Care measures and prevention against pests and diseases
Fertiliser:
If the location is right, the garden jasmine grows without much maintenance. When planting, you can enrich the soil directly with compost. Later there is no additional fertilizermore necessary.
Water requirements:
It is important that the root ball does not dry out. Although the shrub is very easy to care for, it needs plenty of water during longer dry periods. However, waterlogging must not form.
cut:
The chanterelle tree easily tolerates pruning, if necessary, at any time of the year. It usually grows on its own in an attractive shape, so you only need to prun the shrub from below every two to three years. If the garden jasmine is planted as a hedge, a lateral topiary can be useful.
Pests and Diseases:
The double garden jasmine is usually resistant to diseases. Occasionally, however, powdery mildew can occur. Affected leaves must then be removed immediately. Then it makes sense to spray the plant with a mixture of milk and water to prevent it from spreading.
The flowers attract many insects with their strong scent, but unfortunately also harmful aphids. Vigorously hosing down with a garden hose will usually drive the aphids away. However, taking preventative measures is still best. It is therefore best to always spray the plants with nettle manure or garlic broth after flowering.
