Cyprus grass is one of those plants that is very easy to propagate. And that too in four different ways.

The Cyprus grass (Cyperus) is popular as a fast-growing and easy-care houseplant. The water palm can be cultivated during the summer months both outdoors and in the garden pond. If you can't get enough of the plant, you can even multiply it. The propagation can be done in different ways and can also be easily managed by inexperienced hobby gardeners. Cyprus grass can be propagated via:

  • Cuttings
  • Offshoot
  • Seeds
  • Division

Propagation by cuttings

Propagation by cuttings is a fairly simple method. The best time for this is early summer. When propagating cuttings, simply proceed as follows:

❶ Take cuttings that are 15 to 20 centimeters long. In principle, you can use any stem of the plant for this. The only requirement is the tuft of leaves typical of Cyprus grass. You can also use a stalk with the leaves that have dried out at the tips, because these are first shortened to a length of about five centimetres.

❷ Now place the prepared cuttings with the remaining tuft of leaves in a glass of water. The tuft of leaves should always be completely submerged.

❸ Root formation begins after about a month. The white roots are then clearly visible in the glass of water. The new shoots also appear at the upper end of the stem. Once enough new roots have formed, you can transfer the plants to suitable containers. It is an advantage if you put several cuttings together in a planter. If five to ten cuttings are planted together, the plants get their characteristic, bushy growth habit. A single stalk would be exposed to the wind in the open air and would easily buckle without suitable support.

❹ Cyprus grass can be placed in a plastic bucket, waterproof bowl, or in an aquarium. In principle, a bright location is absolutely necessary. However, water palms do not requireexplicitly potting soil. It is also possible to cultivate the rooted cuttings in expanded clay (e.g. available from Amazon) or gravel. The addition of potting soil can act as fertilizer. If you plant the cuttings in gravel or clay, you need to add a complete fertilizer. To avoid over-fertilization, you should follow the manufacturer's instructions. Here are more tips on how to properly plant Cyprus grass.

Propagation by offshoots

Propagation by cuttings is very easy. However, older and particularly lush growing mother plants are required for this. When propagating by cuttings, proceed as follows:

❶ The offshoots are easily visible as they grow from the crown of the plants. You can cut off the resulting offshoots with a sharp knife or scissors.

❷ Then place the offshoots in a glass of water. You should change the water regularly. Rooting then takes place quite quickly.

❸ After about a month the plants will have a sufficient root system to be transplanted into a planter.

Propagation by seeds

If you have a little more patience and gardening skills, you can try propagating by seed. Sowing is possible all year round. Do this as follows:

❶ If you don't have a plant in your inventory yet, you have to buy the seed in relevant gardening companies, specialist stores or online (available e.g. at Amazon). Alternatively, the seeds can also be taken from existing plants. The rather small and inconspicuous seeds are located at the ends of the flower stalks.

❷ The Cyprus grass is one of the light germinators. The seeds are therefore not covered with soil, but only pressed a few millimeters deep into the substrate. The first germs appear after three to four weeks in a bright location at room temperature and constant humidity.

❸ If the seedlings have developed well and have grown to about 15 to 20 centimeters in height, you can transfer them to planters. Group planting is recommended.

Tip:
You can also sow seeds in the later planter. This will save you from having to replant later. The seeds should not be placed too densely, or separated accordingly after germination.

Reproduction by division

Propagation by division is the easiest and, above all, the fastest method of obtaining new plants. Sufficiently large plants can be divided all year round. a divisionis particularly useful in the context of a necessary transplanting in spring. Do this as follows:

❶ First of all, you have to remove the plant from the existing planter.

❷ Now you can divide the plant into two or more segments depending on the size. You should protect the roots.

❸ The individual sections now each receive a new planter and can continue to grow as independent plants. In order for you to succeed, you must properly care for the Cyprus grass.
