Planting tulips is easier than you think. Our little guide will help you and give tips on what to look out for.
Always plant tulip bulbs before the first ground frost. So that you have a veritable sea of flowers in the garden in spring, flower bulbs should be planted in the ground before winter. This includes the tulips. There are many different types here for you to choose from. When buying, it is best to pay attention to the flowering time, which is indicated on the packaging. Choosing different specimens guarantees a long flowering period.Location for the Tulips
It is important that you plant your bulbs a few weeks before the first ground frost. When the ground is frozen, it's already too late. Tulips should not be completely in the shade, which means a sunny spot is ideal, but this should not be too humid. Otherwise there is a risk that your tulip bulbs will rot and you will have to wait in vain for a strong bloom. If you think your tulip location might be getting too wet, mix in some sand, it will loosen the soil at the same time.
Plant Tulips
- Planting takes place between September and the end of October. Make one or more holes in the ground with the planting stick.
The rule of thumb is: Planting depth about twice as deep as the bulb is tall. - The tulip bulbs are inserted with the tip up and the flat side down. You don't have to apply a lot of pressure. So that each tulip has enough space for itself, calculate a planting distance of about 3 to 7 centimeters (small bulbs) and 7 to 20 centimeters for larger bulbs. Now close the planting hole with soil. Please don't press too hard here either and don't forget to water afterwards.
- Depending on personal taste, the tulips can be planted as a "group" or individually between other flowers and perennials.
Do tulips need frost protection?
Tulips are actually quite frost-resistant. However, a little protection can't hurt. Just use some autumn leaves or pine greens to cover it.
Bark mulch is also suitable. When the tulips "shoot" out of the ground in spring, the frost protection must be removed againbecome.
