There are two easy ways to propagate the flowering Calla (Zantedeschia): by seed and by dividing the rhizome.

Calla plants have something very special. They are simply a feast for the eyes in the garden and enchant onlookers with their beautiful calyxes and bright colours. So it's no wonder that many people just can't get enough of these flowers and want to have more and more of them in the garden. After all, that's not a problem, because you can easily multiply Callas yourself. Two promising methods are presented here.

Propagation by seed

Propagating calla lilies by sowing is uncomplicated and actually always successful. However, it takes a few years for flowering plants to develop from the seeds. Nevertheless, it is worth multiplying the calla by sowing. You can do it like this:

❶ If you already have one or more Callas, you can harvest the seeds yourself. To do this, remove the grape-shaped seeds from the plant after the flowering period and store your yield over the winter. By spring the surrounding tissue has dried out and the individual seeds can be easily extracted.

❷ Then put the calla seeds in a wide seed tray with moist soil and sprinkle a thin layer of substrate over them. Then cover the bowl with cling film and choose a warm location with temperatures of at least 18 °C. Water the seeds regularly for the coming weeks.

Important:
Air the bowl for an hour every day to prevent mold growth. If you do discover fungi, remove the affected areas of the substrate and the seeds within immediately.

❸ It takes about five to six weeks for the first seedlings to sprout. Wait until you see which specimens are doing best and plant these seedlings in individual plant pots.

Propagation by rhizome division

❶ Calla can easily be propagated by dividing the rhizome, i.e. the underground tuber. Use a sharp, disinfected knife for this. It is important that both halves of the rhizome have rootsand buds.

❷ Now place the halves a few centimeters deep in individual plant pots and set them up in the house. Now you have to water sparingly but regularly.

❸ With the beginning of budding, the need for liquid increases and you have to increase the watering.

❹ Wait until temperatures are below zero before you move outside. When the ice saints are over, you can plant the calla in the garden.
