If you want to grow hydrangeas for your garden or garden friends yourself, you don't even have to have a green thumb. Propagation by cuttings, for example, is very easy.
Hardly any flower is planted in a garden more than the hydrangea. No wonder, because its rustic charm gives every garden a special flair. In addition, the hydrangea can be used in so many different ways in the garden. Whether as a container plant, in a bed or as a hedge - the hydrangea is always ideal as a flower blob amidst green leaves. You will find its spherical shape, for example, mainly in cottage gardens.
Once you have planted a hydrangea in your garden, you usually can't get enough of it. That's not too bad, because you can grow many other plants from a single hydrangea in no time at all. This is made possible by the propagation of cuttings, which usually always works smoothly with hydrangeas. With a little skill, you can grow a sea of hydrangea blossoms in a short time.
How to propagate hydrangeas from cuttings
1In July, cut off a few new shoots that are not yet woody or have flower buds, and separate them into sections with a pair of leaves at the top and bottom. However, you must cut off the lower leaves. On the other hand, cut the upper ones in half so that the cuttings do not take up so much space in the seed pot and the evaporation surface is also reduced.
2Now put the shoots a few centimeters deep in a pot with potting soil. This contains all the nutrients that the cuttings need in the beginning for root formation. Then moisten the soil well and always make sure that the soil remains moist.
3Now the seed pots need a hood. Here it is sufficient if you simply cover the cuttings with some foil. After about 3 to 4 weeks, the first fine roots will form in a shady spot in the garden. Then you can literally watch the cuttings get bigger and bigger.
4Once enough roots have formed, you can transplant the cuttings into individual small pots. The little plants no longer need a cover. In winter, however, you mustbring it indoors and put it in a cool place. Next spring you can plant the new hydrangea plants completely in the garden.
Important:
Hydrangeas need a lot of water. Therefore it is important that you water them regularly. It is also important that you fertilize the hydrangeas regularly. Simply add a special hydrangea fertilizer to the irrigation water every two months.
