The sun bride actually multiplies by itself. But if you want to be in control yourself, there are two ways to propagate the perennial.
It is not for nothing that the sun bride - also known as Helenium - is so popular as a plant with many garden owners. It shows itself in many months of the year in veritable blooms of red and orange and grows so well that it even spreads in the garden on its own. The plant survives the winter - with frost and sub-zero temperatures - almost without any problems. The perennial native to the prairie of North America is now available in about 90 species and is suitable even for people without green thumbs, which is why it is widely planted. Because it survives the winter, you can also enjoy the magnificent sight of the sun-loving plant for many years. So it's not surprising that many gardeners want to propagate this pretty plant - but how do you go about it?What speaks for the multiplication of the sun bride?
Actually, the sun bride spreads itself well in the garden area, but all the conditions have to be right for this, such as the space available. The rapid growth usually speaks for the sun shrub, but many gardeners do not like it when the beautiful flower occupies the space uncontrollably - so it is often pruned and thus put in its place. In addition, many gardeners prefer it if they can propagate the robust plant themselves and then plant it either in pots or in another, self-determined place in the garden. At the same time, it may also be that you want to propagate the sun bride in order to give it away to someone - because honestly, this way you can also save costs in the tree nursery or at the florist. So what reasons could there be for wanting to multiply the perennial in a controlled manner instead of waiting for it to spread in the garden?
- The independent spread of the sun bride (direction of growth) cannot be controlled in the garden
- There is no more space in the garden designated for the Sunbride
- you want to give the plant away to other lovers
- one would like to plant the Sunbride elsewhere on the property
- you want to keep the sun bride in a bucket on the terrace or balcony
So there are a lot of arguments in favor of propagating the Sunbride. But this process does not turn on by itself: the gardener has to approach the matter with a little know-how, effort and patience. It is good to know, however, that even laypeople can easily propagate Sonnenbraut plants. Propagating one of the many subspecies and being crowned with success is no problem if done correctly.
Multiplying sun brides - explained step by step
If you want to support the bed of the sun bride in its propagation and spread, but at the same time want to rejuvenate the plant, you can do this with the help of a very easy-to-implement method. This is also suitable for propagating the plant for flower tubs and as a gift, so that the plant requires very little effort in this regard. The propagation of the coneflower is accomplished by dividing its roots. To do this, proceed as follows:
- A part of the root is cut off with a sharp spade at the edge of the plant root and thus separated. Dividing off a third usually shows very good results in terms of both the main plant and the daughter plant recovering. This process is only to be carried out in spring at the beginning of the growing season, or alternatively in autumn at the end of this phase.
- The root cuttings obtained are now planted in the garden of your choice, but should be at least 30cm apart so that they can spread sufficiently.
- The newly planted sunbeams are watered well without creating waterlogging - and always kept slightly moist so that they can root well before winter.
- Adding some fertilizer helps to provide the fresh perennials with sufficient nutrients and stimulate their growth.

Multiply sun bride with seeds
Another method of propagating Sunbride is to grow it from seeds. For this you can collect the seeds of the sun bride through her flowers and plant them in flower pots as quickly as possible. This is best done in April. With the help of some foil and a sunny place and sufficient moisturethe seeds usually germinate after up to 14 days.
Once the seedlings have grown several centimeters high, they can be planted individually and in new, separate pots. Planting in the garden is only recommended after a year in spring, so that the plant can get through the winter well and has enough time to settle there beforehand. Since this is usually very successful and many seedlings of the perennial are obtained, it is advisable to pass on or give away some young plants to friends and acquaintances or relatives. After all, the pretty plants delight almost every flower lover and can also be used wonderfully as cut flowers, so that they are always well received as a gift. Incidentally, cutting off the stems for bouquet purposes is recommended from time to time, as this not only stimulates the formation of new flowers so that you can enjoy the blooms for longer, but also helps to strengthen the plant. However, this should no longer be carried out in autumn.
The propagation of the sun bride is therefore quite simple and can be carried out easily by any lover of the plant. This process is even suitable for gaining experience, as the main plant proves to be robust and always survives.
