Elderberry has a long tradition in our gardens. Whenever you are looking for a suitable bush, you should shortlist the elderberry.
White blossoms, black berries
The visual appearance of the elderberry alone is perfect. The bush can be kept small and compact by pruning. But it can also grow up to 2.5 meters high. In spring it surprises with wonderful white flowers that smell good. The typical black elderberries then develop from this. Elder needs a place in the sun, but it also likes partial shade. If it is regularly fertilized with mature compost and watered well, it will develop magnificently.
Processing flowers and berries
You can process the berries of the elder as well as the flowers. You can, for example, prepare the flowers in batter in a pan and then nibble the crispy elderflowers with relish. The berries can be used to make juice, wine, jam, jelly, and even cough syrup. They are rich in potassium and vitamins A, B and C. The berries even have healing properties. For example, they have a blood-cleansing, haemostatic, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, expectorant and fungicidal effect. The berries can therefore be used for many diseases.
