In order to maintain the engine's performance, it is important that you give your lawn mower an oil change at least once a year. Here are two instructions.
Like any other garden tool, you need to take care of your lawnmower. This not only includes cleaning the lawnmower and sharpening the blade, but also winterizing it properly (tips here) and waiting. This also includes changing the oil. You should change this once a season, but at the latest after 25 working hours.
You basically have two options. First, you can tilt your lawnmower and open the drain plug to drain the oil. On the other hand, and this is also the more environmentally friendly option, you can also change the oil with the help of an oil change set. The oil is pumped out with a syringe. Instructions for both variants are given below.
Oil change by opening the drain plug
» Step 1:
You should always change the oil when the lawnmower is warm. So this means that you should start your lawnmower and let it run for a few minutes. Then switch off the engine again.
» Step 2:
Now disconnect the ignition wire and be sure to secure it a safe distance from the spark plugs. In this way you avoid an unwanted start and thus also an accident (see report on das-sichere-haus.de).
» Step 3:
Now tilt your lawnmower so that the oil can collect over the drain plug and place a film or newspaper under the lawnmower.
» Step 4:
Now place a container under the drain plug and open it. Then let all the oil drain out.
» Step 5:
Once all the old oil has run out, you can now top up with the right amount of the right oil (see your lawnmower manual for instructions).
Perform an oil change using an oil change set
» Step 1:
Let the engine warm up and then, to be on the safe side, disconnect the ignition cable again.
» Step 2:
Take itNow take the syringe from the oil change kit and insert the hose into the oil tank.
» Step 3:
Use the syringe to draw all the oil out of the tank and pour it into the bottle provided.
» Step 4:
Now you can pour in the new oil (available here, for example) and screw the tank back on.
Conclusion
Changing the oil on a lawn mower yourself is not difficult at all. Nevertheless, you should rather rely on the variant with the oil change set (available here). The reason: If you tilt your lawn mower to remove the oil, something usually always spills. If you do this directly in the garden, then of course it is not exactly environmentally friendly. In addition, the lawnmower is also smeared after the oil change. Nevertheless, it is of course up to you how you carry out the oil change.
