What could be nicer than a bright yellow forsythia? Don't own one yet? But then quickly. We show how forsythia is planted and cared for.

The approximately 3 meter high forsythia bushes are one of the first plants in the garden to bloom, starting in March! On top of that, the forsythia (Forsythia) is extremely robust and at the same time very easy to care for. There are several reasons why you should get this bright yellow flowering shrub in your garden. We also explain how the forsythia is planted and cared for.

How to plant forsythia

When planting, you should only consider that the forsythia needs a location that is as sunny as possible, although the forsythia also thrive in partial shade. Once the perfect location has been found, you should proceed as follows when planting:

  1. Water the planting hole well
  2. Insert plant ball in planting hole
  3. Fill the planting hole with soil
  4. Starting well on earth

Tip:
Cut off the branches of the forsythia on St. Barbara's Day (December 4) and put them in a vase. The branches then bloom wonderfully around Christmas time!

How to properly care for forsythia

❍ Pruning:

Forsythia require relatively little care, but regular annual pruning of the forsythia is an absolute must. This cut should always be done immediately after flowering. The reason for this is that the shrub is already preparing for the new flowering over the course of the year. If you prune the forsythia too late, you will have to forego a full bloom next spring.

Tip:
You can use the pruning immediately to propagate the forsythia. Simply free up to 20 cm long, slightly woody shoots from the lower leaves and then put two thirds of them in a soil-sand mixture or in fresh potting soil. Then keep slightly moist and warm to allow roots to form.

However, if you have planted the forsythia as a flowering hedge, pruning is not recommended until July, so straightbirds can still spend their breeding season there undisturbed.

❍ Fertilize:

In principle, forsythia do not need to be fertilized. For this, however, they need a nutrient-rich soil. If this is not the case, you should fill up the soil once a year in autumn with fresh humus or work in compost around the plant.

❍ casting:

In long periods of drought, you must also water the forsythia moderately. However, you should urgently avoid waterlogging.

❍ Loosen up the soil:

If the soil around the plant is too compacted, you should loosen it up with a rake from time to time. This has the advantage that rainwater can drain off again unhindered.
