In order for tomatoes to grow large and tasty and for a bounty to be harvested, good cultivation is required. Find out how to plant your tomatoes here.
Annual plan
We have put together an annual plan for you here, which should help you to plant and care for your tomatoes so that they grow big and tasty and you can reap richly:
January: Start sowing now, ideally in a warm apartment or in the greenhouse.
February/March: The young plants emerge from the ground. Plants that are particularly strong must now be transplanted into individual pots.
April: Now the young plants come outside. Give the plants a stick as a trellis so they can climb up and support themselves.
May/June: It is best to water the plants directly over the ground. This prevents mold growth or pest infestation on the leaves. Don't forget to fertilize and very important: remove the stinging shoots every 2 - 3 days by simply breaking them off.
Stingy shoots grow exactly in the fork between the main shoots. As you can see on my picture:
July to October: You still have to break out the so-called stinging shoots, this ensures that the fruits become more lush and larger. Harvest time starts in August and lasts until October. The plants are still flowering even though they are already bearing fruit.
November/December: Now you have to remove the plants and, if they are pest-free, you can put them on the compost. It is then advisable to incorporate ripe compost directly into the garden soil. Then new tomato plants will find “fresh” nutrients next year.
