Many people like to plant cabbage themselves. Most commonly white cabbage and red cabbage. During the winter, you should take extra care to store your cabbage properly.
Harvest cabbage
If you have white and red cabbage in the garden and want to store them at home over the winter, then you should follow a few rules. First of all, it is important that the cabbage stays outside in the bed as long as possible. This can happen up until the first frost. But then the cabbage should be harvested. To do this, pull the cabbage heads out of the ground together with the stalk. You can leave the stalk on the cabbage. You only have to roughly remove the soil itself. Now you have two options to store the cabbages.
Storing cabbage - 2 variants
- The best way is this: simply hang up the cabbages. All you have to do is bend the large binders upwards and tie them together with the stalk. With this method, the cabbages are optimally protected against fungal diseases.
- As an alternative to this variant, you can also place the cabbages in airy wooden boxes and cover them with jute bags. You should remember to check regularly whether the cabbages are rotting. It is very important for this storage variant that you leave the binders on the cabbage head. In this way, the young and tender leaves inside are optimally protected.
