Weeds are popularly known as wild herbs. There are some very persistent strains that make life difficult for a gardener. Only by fighting weeds can you get rid of them.
Fighting methods
Fight the weeds properly - but please without chemicals! We have put together a few control methods for some wild herbs for you here:
- Dandelions are best dug out with a dandelion digger including the taproot. If leftovers remain, new plants will form from them.
- Stinging nettles are weeded out by hand (put on gloves) or dig out with a spade. The same method is used for field thistle, field morning glory, ribwort and broadleaf plantain and goutweed.
- The field horsetail is cut off with a sharp knife just below the surface of the earth.
- Prick out the couch grass with a sharp object, it should be dug very deep.
Keeping Weeds in Check
Many gardeners, especially those who own cottage gardens, do not remove weeds. This is not a problem in this case either, but it should be kept in check because it can compete with other plants for their habitat. Field bindweed and ground elder are particularly insidious, which are difficult to combat and which can form meter-long roots.
