So that your fig tree can give you plenty of delicious fruit every year, it depends on the right fertilization.
Fig trees can be found in more and more gardens. They originally come from the Mediterranean region and spread a Mediterranean flair. In addition, the fruits are very tasty. In order for you to be able to harvest them in abundance, the otherwise easy-care fig needs enough nutrients. Otherwise the fruit would not develop properly and would die before harvest. It's not just about the right fertilizer, but also the time and the amount or frequency of fertilization.
When should the fig be fertilized?
Like other plants, the fig tree needs the most nutrients when it grows. This is the case between April and September. Outdoor figs in particular should be fertilized regularly during the summer months. It is good if you add a good dose of fertilizer to the irrigation water once a week.
It is also important that you do not simply stop fertilizing your outdoor figs in autumn. It is better if you slowly reduce the amount of fertilizer and lengthen the periods between fertilizer applications until you finally do without fertilizer completely over the winter. This procedure helps the fig to form new shoots and complete growth before winter. In winter you don't have to fertilize either outdoor figs or figs that are in pots outdoors.
There is a difference with figs, which are cultivated in tubs but have not yet overwintered outdoors. These include young figs that are less than two years old and have to overwinter indoors. These figs also tolerate regular fertilization in winter, but this does not have to be done weekly.
What fertilizer do figs grow well with?
In addition to natural fertilizers such as compost, you can also buy fertilizers that ensure good growth. However, several variants have proven to be particularly effective:
- Vegetable fertilizer
- Citrus Plant Fertilizer
- complete mineral fertilizer
- common liquid fertilizer
If you later plant your fig outdoors, you can start fertilizing with a complete fertilizer. After a few fertilizing periods, simply switch to conventional liquid fertiliser. It is important that you choose a fertilizer that contains phosphorus and potassium. Potassium allows the fig to ripen well - on the other hand, the fig develops good inflorescences if it receives sufficient phosphorus. Reading tip: Plant fig trees - best on the house wall.
