Peppermint is a must in a herb garden. After all, it not only smells good, it also refines food and can also be used to make a delicious tea.
Peppermint is not only suitable for adding to desserts, you can of course also use it to make peppermint tea or simply enjoy the wonderful scent. If you want to bring them into the garden, you should definitely plant them in a bucket. Because on the one hand most mint varieties are not hardy and on the other hand mint grows very fast. It forms underground runners that wander throughout the garden. Because of this, it's best if you keep them in a pot. There she has limits that she cannot overcome. If the plant gets too big, you can always give it a larger pot.
Root barrier can help in the garden
If you still want to plant peppermint in the garden, it is best to build a root barrier to stop the plant. You can either get a special root fleece from a specialist or remove the soil from a bucket, dig it into the ground and plant the mint there. The roots can no longer spread. However, it is generally more advisable to plant the mint in a pot. This also makes hibernation easier.
How to properly plant mint in pots
You can buy mint plants in almost every garden market. Sometimes even in the discounter. You can actually put these pots directly in a planter in the garden. But it is better if you plant the mint in a slightly larger pot. The best way to do this is as follows:
- Fill a pot with some loose substrate that has a high humus content.
- Now place the mint ball in some water so that it can soak.
- If the root ball is nice and wet, you can put the mint in the pot.
- Now press down the soil and water well.
It is best to do this once a year. Mint removes nutrients from the soil. So always change the soil in the spring.
How to properly care for the mint in the pot
Casting:
Potted mint needs a little maintenance. You have to water them every day in summer, for example, because the root ball dries out quickly at high temperatures. However, there must be no waterlogging.
Cut:
You can cut the mint several times a year as it grows very quickly. It is best to cut the mint at the beginning of February/March when they begin to sprout and/or in autumn after flowering.
Hiberation:
Potted peppermint, which is not hardy, must be brought indoors during the cold season. Hardy varieties, on the other hand, can be left outside. Then, however, cover them with some garden fleece or brushwood. Also make sure that the ground does not freeze completely. It is therefore best to place the tubs on a small polystyrene plate.
