Storing firewood properly is not difficult. The trick, however, is to store it decoratively. So here are some storage tips and ideas.
If you store firewood, you can use it not only to light the fireplace from time to time. Firewood can also be stacked in the garden in a very decorative way. This can then also be used to achieve great effects, such as a garden room divider, fence systems, creative patterns, etc.
However, precise preparatory work is then required, which represents the necessary basis for a decorative stack of firewood. So here are our tips on how to store the firewood optimally.
Store firewood correctly - follow these tips
Tip 1 - Planning:
First of all, you need to plan for what purpose you want to use the stack of firewood, e.g. as a rustic house siding. From this, the need for firewood for this sub-area can ultimately be calculated. This value can, but does not have to, correspond to the general need value for firewood.
» Important:
The length of the individual logs is of course extremely important for decorative storage. This depends on the oven depth and usually ranges between 25 and 50 centimeters. What is important here is an exact cut that is always the same length, which can be optimally realized with a tilting saw.
Tip 2 - Underlay:
Firewood should never be stacked directly on the natural floor so that it does not absorb any moisture but can dry well. A wooden batten, longer firewood poles, metal pipes and the like serve as a base for a stack of firewood.
Tip 3 - Side Holder:
You can also use so-called side supports to stabilize stacks of wood, so that they can no longer break away to the right and left. For this purpose, a wide variety of models made of different materials are already available in specialist shops. You can also easily make such side holders yourself from glazed wooden slats.
» Important:
As a rule, a span of 4 meters should not be exceeded. Longer stacks of wood should always be secured again by inserted side bracketsinterrupted to ensure stability.
Another possibility, especially with fence systems, is to wall in the side brackets and to stack the firewood evenly between the wall gaps every year.
Tip 4 - Shelter:
It is also a good idea to build a suitable shelter for frequently used firewood stacks. You can then pile up the firewood in it year after year. Outdoor seating, which has firewood walls on three sides and reflects an extremely attractive character, is quite effective. On top of this there is a stable roof construction.
Tip 5 - Cover:
So that the firewood remains dry once it is dry, you must always cover free-standing stacks. Special attachments are suitable for this (e.g. corrugated iron, wooden constructions, etc.) or tear-resistant protective films that can be weighed down with heavy stones.
Stack firewood decoratively - 2 ideas presented
Although logs of firewood can all be cut to the same length, they vary in thickness, so there are two ways of arranging them:
- Either arrange row by row lengthways
- or always stack across row by row.
No matter which sideboard you choose in the end: there must always be a balance between the individual rows. This is ideally done with small logs that you can easily insert between the regular logs.
Idea No. 1 - Round stack:
A round stack is an eye-catcher in large gardens. At the same time, huge amounts of firewood can be stowed within a round stack, which is why this type of serving is absolutely recommended for larger amounts of firewood.
For this purpose, you must first arrange the firewood poles in a circular shape on the underside and plan them with smooth boards. Then arrange the individual pieces of wood in a circle on the outside and fill the middle circle piece by piece using the pouring technique.
You should insert a smooth middle layer (e.g. with boards) at a height of around 60 to 80 centimeters in order to provide sufficient balance for the round stack. Finally, you have to cover the round stack with a protective cover.
» Tip:
Round stacks can also be effectively decorated with willow branches. But you can also leave individual logs longer,so they stick out when layering. You can then add fun details to these evenly arranged logs, such as wind chimes, lanterns, a winter bird feeder, etc.
Idea no. 2 - creative serving:
An artistic variant of stacking firewood is creative arranging. For example, you can use different types of wood to create patterns or motifs on the walls.
For the respective motif, you should definitely make a true-to-scale drawing beforehand, as this makes it much easier to serve afterwards. This is a good variant that even beginners can use to learn how to arrange firewood creatively.
