You have ivy in your garden and want to cover as much as possible with it? Then multiply the plant. The best way to do this is with a layer and fresh shoots.
Ivy is one of the most frugal plants that bring a touch of green to the garden, balcony or even the home all year round. In addition, the plant is very easy to care for and does not present you with any insurmountable hurdles when it comes to propagation. There are two easy ways you can propagate the creeper. Namely by means of sinkers and shoots.
First of all:
Common ivy (Hedera helix) has a serious disadvantage: it quickly triggers allergic reactions and causes skin rashes. Therefore, only multiply ivy when you are wearing gloves.
How to propagate ivy well
Option 1 - multiply ivy with shoots:
The climbing plant can be propagated very easily using shoots. You don't even need a lot of tools to get to the shoots and you don't have to worry about a suitable growing place. It is enough if you take a pair of scissors, a water bowl and the old ivy plant:
❶ Look for fresh shoots on the plant from which no adhesive roots are yet sticking out. Then cut off individual shoots. A length of ten centimeters per shoot is recommended.
❷ Remove the leaves that are at the end of the shoot. It is important that the shoot retains at least two leaves.
❸ Now place the shoots in a bowl of water and wait for them to root.
Tip:
The water in the container quickly becomes cloudy or falls over. Just add a piece of charcoal from your last barbecue to the water and it stays fresh.
❹ As soon as sufficient roots have formed, you can place the ivy directly in the garden or grow it in a flower pot. A good time to plant out is when the roots are about an inch long.
Option 2 - multiply ivy with layerers:
If you don't want to search for shoots to propagate the ivy, then you need a larger plant. If you have one, go like thisbefore:
❶ Select an ivy tendril that is long enough and carefully cut into the sinker.
❷ Now lay him on the floor and fix him. Alternatively, you can place the tendril in a pot with soil and fix it there. Then cover the shoot with soil and keep it permanently moist.
❸ Once the shoot has established its own roots, cut it off the mother plant and plant it in your preferred spot.
