There are roses without thorns, or rather without thorns. But the offer is very small. Here we present some varieties.
“Roses have thorns”, countless poets and songwriters use this metaphor to symbolize beauty and pain, love and lovesickness.Well, artistic license allows them to impute thorns to the queen of the flower. From a botanical point of view, however, this is not correct. Instead of thorns, roses have thorns. But there are also some varieties that are thornless. We would like to introduce them to you here.
What is the difference between thorns and prickles?
Thorns are stinging outgrowths of the plants and sprout from the wood of the plant shoots. Caution is advised: they can injure themselves very painfully on thorns.
Such thorny outgrowths are found on sloe, white and sea buckthorn, for example.
Spricks sprout from the bark tissue of the plant. So they sit on the shoot and are easy to remove. In contrast to the thorns, you can snap off the spines at the side and remove them.
However, there is also a risk of injuring yourself on the thorns of the rose shoots. It is therefore best to wear gardening gloves when caring for the rose bed.
Prickly Roses
Except for a small number of roses, almost all modern varieties have thorns. Garden lovers and flower lovers who still have children in the household are therefore primarily looking for roses without thorns. But anyone who thinks that thornless roses are completely harmless is wrong. Because there are often small spines on the middle rib of the underside of the leaf and can cause some scratches.
The selection of thornless garden roses is very small and limited exclusively to shrub and climbing roses.
