The numerous varieties that are now available in specialist shops enable high-yield pumpkin cultivation even in regionally cooler temperatures - pumpkins are generally extremely warm.

However, it is advisable for every gardener to first get an idea of the numerous pumpkin varieties and their countless possible uses before growing pumpkins in their own garden. In addition to reading specialist literature, visits to the numerous pumpkin harvest festivals, which are usually held in autumn by the gardeners or on some farms, are also suitable for this. Once you have decided on a variety, all you have to do is plant it. Here are two ways you can do that.

» Option no. 1 - sowing in plant pots:
The pumpkin seeds are sown in small plant pots from mid-April so that they can be planted in warm, sun-flooded rooms optimally develop. Put the core with the pointed side down in the potting soil that was previously poured into the plant pots - press down lightly. Only one core should be used per plant pot, since pumpkins need a lot of space from the start.
Tip: The core should only be placed slightly below the surface of the earth. Possibly even a small core fissure can peek out at the top.
If the pumpkin plant has developed well after a few weeks (approx. 4 to 6 leaves), it can be planted outdoors. To do this, first let the pumpkins in the plant pots get used to the temperatures outside for a week, then plant the pumpkin seedlings in the desired location.
» Option no. 2 - outdoor sowing:
However, the gardener would like thatSow the pumpkin seeds immediately outdoors, the time should not be chosen until mid-May - after the frosty ice saints. In this case, the pumpkin seeds are pressed about 1 to 2 centimeters deep into the ground and covered with a protective fleece for the first few days.
Tip: If you let the pumpkin seeds soak in lukewarm water for 24 hours beforehand, sowing in the ground usually develops better.
The basic rule for both sowings is that the distance between the pumpkin seeds or small plants should always be around 1 meter or more. Because the pumpkin plants develop very extensively - whether in the form of a bush or as a vine.
