Plants can get sunburned too. Read here how such sunburn affects plants and how you can protect them from it.
As a rule, not all plants can get sunburn. Often only very sun-sensitive plants are affected. However, if a plant suffers such a sunburn, it can cause immense damage, in some cases even causing it to die completely.
We would therefore like to give you useful tips so that your plants do not get sunburned.
Protect plants from sunburn - 4 tips
» Tip 1 - get plants used to the sun:
Plants should only slowly get used to the natural rays of the sun again after they have left their winter quarters, usually immediately after the ice saints from around mid-May. You can do this by giving them a partially shaded spot in the garden for the first few days.
You can then place the plants in the sun in the morning and evening when the sun slowly increases or decreases. And only after this acclimatization phase, which should last about 2 to 3 weeks, can you expose the plants to sunlight all day. And of course only if they can tolerate the associated temperatures.
» Tip 2 - sun protection:
Alternatively, you can of course also protect your plants from excessive solar radiation with sun protection. A flexibly adjustable awning or a transportable parasol is suitable for this. An awning is of course best for potted plants on the terrace and balcony.
The same goes for berries: while they need the sun so badly for their growth and flavor, it can damage the berry skin and cause cracks, causing the fruit to dry out. This problem often occurs with grapes, which are subject to a long ripening process during which they even lose their protective foliage. As soon as they shed their leaves, you have to cover the fruits directly with an awning, for example, on particularly hot autumn daysProtect from sunlight.
The issue of sun protection is also problematic for lawns. And this is exactly where the sunburn problem occurs very often and manifests itself in the form of brown spots. You can only remedy this by regularly watering in the evening hours. Or you can sow fresh lawn seed in the affected areas.
» Tip 3 - Water properly:
Furthermore, you should never water your plants in strong sunlight, as this can burn the leaves very quickly. The reason for this is the water droplets, which can mainly cling to rough leaf surfaces and react like a kind of burning glass.
Important:
Of course, this also applies to plants in greenhouses or on the windowsill.
» Tip 4 - protect tree bark:
There is also a risk that the bark of trees will crack due to the effects of high heat. However, you can remedy this by painting the tree trunks with a special white paint.
Advantage:
The white color (available from Amazon) reflects the sun's rays and thus optimally protects the tree bark from sunburn.
