If the garden is very small, but you don't want to do without fruit, it is advisable to plant espalier fruit.
Trellised fruit wraps house walls
Trellied fruit climbs up every wall, even if the location is perhaps not so favourable. It is well protected by the wall and will thrive. A fruit tree has the disadvantage that it takes up a lot of space. Trellis fruit, on the other hand, has the advantage that it takes up little space and does not make too many demands on the soil. If you plant trellis fruit, you can wrap your house wall nicely in this way. Just try it. However, if you want espalier fruit, you will need to be patient.
Plant fruit on espalier
First you have to choose the right tree. This should not be older than two years. Plant it where it is intended. Then you need to set the structure. You must tie the lower branches to a holding device in the horizontal. There are already trees that have this shape, but these are much more expensive. And now it's time to wait, cut and tie again and again.
Pruning espalier fruit
If the branches get too long, they have to be trimmed, and this several times during the season. All other, regrowing branches, direct them around the frame as you like them. Either in the U-shape or just horizontally, although you can also vary the height here. Depending on the type of fruit, you will be able to harvest the first fruits two or three years later.
