An ornamental grass that always attracts attention is the fog grass. Read here how to plant and care for this filigree mist grass.
The fairly unknown fog grass, which grows every year, quickly becomes a special eye-catcher in the garden and a great alternative to other types of grass and reeds such as pampas grass. Because its fine spikelets make it look like the plant is lying in a fog. It is therefore perfect for use as a table decoration or as a delicate accessory for flower bouquets.
» Tip:
Cut off fog grass, dry overhead, spray lightly with color and tie into dried bouquets or bouquets of flowers - a delicate filling that unfolds its effect optimally!
If you want to get this great eye-catcher in your garden, then here are some tips on how to grow and care for the fog grass.
Plant Mist Grass
The soft pink to yellow-brown flowering fog grass, often referred to as cloud grass, is usually offered as seed in specialist shops. You should sow these seeds in spring (approx. from April) in a place that is as sunny as possible, to really only slightly semi-shady, about 3 centimeters deep in soil that is as permeable as possible. Then lightly pile up the earth on top, press down and water.
You can also plant the fog grass from North Africa in tubs. Placed on terraces and balconies, the fog grass looks extremely decorative.
» Tip:
If severe frosts are still to be expected (usually until the Ice Saints), you should protect the seed that has already been sown with garden fleece again.
After just a few days, the fog grass (germination time approx. 5 to 10 days) will sprout out of the ground and develop into a perennial plant with an average height of approx. 60 centimeters, which should not be missing, especially in Mediterranean gardens.
» Tip:
In late summer or autumn you should remove enough seeds from the ornamental grass perennial, dry them and spread them out again next spring. In good locations, the fog grass even multiplies by itself if you sow it yourself.
Fog Grass Care Tips
Watering/fertilizing:
Ornamental grassesusually require little maintenance. You should only water them moderately in the morning and/or evening on hot days. An additional dose of complete fertilizer is only appropriate if there is a visible need.
Pruning:
The fog grass blooms from July to September and should never be cut back immediately after flowering (self-sowing). Only in late autumn should you completely cut off the already withered grass.
