The fragrant lawn chamomile is an undemanding ground cover because you can plant it very easily. Read how to do this here.
The fragrant lawn chamomile can form densely closed areas with lush greenery, which is why public spaces and company forecourts in particular like to use this type of easy-care greenery. The hardy lawn chamomile is also hard-wearing and has long-lasting, white flowers in summer (June to September).
Special cultivar: English lawn chamomile
In the meantime, in addition to the so-called Roman lawn chamomile, an English lawn chamomile is also available, which also thrives in partial shade without any problems. And this ground cover, which grows to a maximum height of only 5 centimetres, is also far better suited for fragrant green lawns.
However, the disadvantage of this plant species is that it is only partially hardy and then, above all, the frosty waterlogging quickly causes problems. However, you can positively counteract this problem by forming drainage within the lawn cushion.
Sowing the lawn chamomile
The pleasantly fragrant lawn chamomile prefers an absolutely sunny location and nutrient-rich soil that can have plenty of moisture. The sowing should then take place directly on site and preferably in the spring. The lawn chamomile also grows in late summer without any problems, after which it then develops well in the following year. The plant then spreads independently over several years.
» Tip:
The lawn chamomile is also well suited for growing in pots, which means that it can sometimes spread its fragrance on terraces and balconies.
Care for lawn chamomile
Pruning:
The lawn chamomile, also known as Roman chamomile, grows up to a maximum of 20 centimeters high. Nevertheless, you should cut back the lawn chamomile vigorously every year immediately after flowering. This pruning promotes the dense growth of this perennial plant in the long term.
» Tip:
The lawn chamomile is not only used as a scented plant, but is also often used as a medicinal plantUsed for digestive problems, toothache and earache, among others.
Irrigation:
Even if the lawn chamomile usually tolerates drought well, you should water the plant in the morning or evening if possible, especially on hot summer days.
Fertilize:
Fertilization of the scent pads is usually hardly ever necessary. If necessary, however, you can apply a complete fertilizer once a year in spring.
