The golden strawberry is quite undemanding. However, a little care is essential so that its yellow flowers can spread.
A yellow carpet of flowers in the shade - this is how the golden strawberry (Waldsteinia fragarioides) makes an impression! The flowering period isn't too long, but it's definitely worth the sight. If it is not yet blooming or is no longer blooming, the hardy golden strawberry or Waldsteinia provides attractive ground cover in the garden. It grows creeping flat and can even suppress weeds. The plant fits between trees and is also very suitable for grave design. You see, the golden strawberry has its advantages. However, these can only develop fully if you pay attention to a few things when caring for them. Because even if the plant is very easy to care for and undemanding, there are still some care instructions that you should follow.
Partial shade to shade and nutrient-rich soil
You can use the Waldsteinia in many ways in the garden. It thrives in shady and semi-shady locations. Ensure humus-rich and well-drained soil.
The golden strawberry is not particularly demanding, but does not tolerate waterlogging. If the leaves turn brownish or dark, the soil is too compacted and there is a risk of water stagnating in the soil. Clay, sand or fine gravel make the soil more permeable. Brief dry phases, on the other hand, are well tolerated without the plant suffering.
Suitable for larger areas
You can easily green larger areas with the golden strawberry. Group planting is the most beautiful. Plant several perennials next to each other. You can count on about eight to twelve perennials per square meter. The plant spreads by about five to ten centimeters a year. The final height is ten to fifteen centimeters. Fully grown golden strawberries form a dense, green carpet that reliably keeps weeds at bay. Once planted, you only have a little work to do with the golden strawberry.
You can cut back the perennials in spring or after flowering if they become too sprawling. That happens relativelyfast, because the plant with its extensions increases in addition to the normal growth.
From April to May, the plant blooms profusely with countless small, yellow flowers, despite the shade. The bright yellow is a great splash of color in the spring garden. For honey bees and wild bees, the flowers are one of the first food sources in spring. If you prefer to plant the golden strawberry in a sunny location, regular watering is important. The plant does not need fertilizer, but you can use mature compost or water it with pond water from time to time if you have a garden pond.
Golden Strawberry in Autumn
The perennial is semi-evergreen: in autumn the leaves turn reddish brown. If the plants are under trees, be sure to remove fallen leaves. The golden strawberry suffers from a layer of leaves, the delicate, three-part leaves can rot.
