No garden should be without horseradish these days. After all, it not only refines food, it also has a healing effect. Plus, it's easy to grow.
Would you like to plant horseradish in your garden? That shouldn't be a problem if you pay attention to a few little things and treat the horseradish as described here. Of course, you can also buy horseradish in a jar, but fresh horseradish from the garden tastes a lot spicier and, above all, more natural. You can also use the fresh root as a medicinal plant. Horseradish, for example, has an antibacterial, diuretic and expectorant effect.
So don't be afraid to grow the vegetables yourself. It doesn't take much work either. Even those who do not own a garden can grow horseradish. After all, the vegetables can also be planted in the tub. So if you only have a balcony, you don't have to do without the taste of fresh horseradish. In order for the cultivation to succeed, you just need to plant it in time. The best time to plant is in spring, i.e. March/April.
How to grow horseradish in the garden
Before you plant horseradish in your garden, you should know one thing: where you grow it now, you may not plant the vegetable again for four years. Do this as follows:
❶ Obtain fully grown roots from which you will cut the side shoots. These should be at least 25 centimeters long and no less than one centimeter in circumference. You now have to cut off these shoots directly at the base. The interface must then dry.
❷ Now it's off to the ground with it. Dig the new roots into the soil so that about two inches stick out. Cultivation should also always take place in rows. Maintain a distance of 80 cm between rows and 30 cm between plants.
❸ If you water the horseradish well now, it should soon sprout at the top. In mid-May to mid-June, when the shoots are about 10 cm long, you need to uncover the heads and break off the side shoots. But the plant does not come out of the groundto fetch! Then spread the soil over the shoots again. In the fall you can then harvest your own strong horseradish spears.
➤ A little tip:
In very humid locations it can happen that the horseradish spreads a lot. But you can stop the growth of horseradish. Read how it works here.
How to properly plant horseradish in tubs
If you don't have a garden, you don't have to do without the aromatic taste of horseradish. After all, you can also plant it in a bucket. The best way to do this is as follows:
❶ Mix equal parts compost, sand, and garden soil, then place the substrate in a bucket.
❷ Then take a horseradish root about 25 cm long and 1 cm thick and stick it diagonally into the ground. The upper end must then protrude about 3 cm from the ground.
❸ Now you have to keep the soil nice and moist and remove all side shoots in June. When all the leaves start to wither in October, you can start harvesting.
➤ A little tip:
If you don't separate the side parts in June, you should do so at the latest during the harvest. If you then store them in sandboxes over the winter, you can put the sides back in the ground the following spring.
