Every gardener wants to know that their plants are well cared for while on holiday. That's why we're giving you tips on how to properly prepare your garden for the holiday.
The right preparation is particularly important when there are many hot days, i.e. longer dry periods or hot thunderstorms. Even if none of your neighbors or friends are willing or able to do the gardening while you're away, or you don't want to hire a professional gardening service, your plants don't have to suffer. There are a few small tips on how to get through the holiday season despite the lack of care on your part.
5 tips how plants survive the holiday season well
➤ Tip 1 - the right preparation:
Just before the holiday begins, you should give your garden a thorough clean up. Now you should, among other things:
- Weeding
- mow the lawn (about 3 days before)
- loosen the soil in the beds (about 1 day before)
- cleaning the garden pond
- Apply Fertilizer
- Water all plants well (immediately before the trip)
Additional tip: Bark mulch stores moisture for a long time, which is why you should spread it around the plants shortly before your holiday trip. Water vigorously again in the evening/morning before the holiday trip!
➤ Tip 2 - Watering:
Probably the biggest problem is watering the plants on particularly warm days. For this purpose, a wide variety of watering aids are now available in specialist gardening shops, which you can control or time either using a digital timer or a computer, whereby your garden then watered automatically every day. Of course including the lawns on hot summer days.
➤ Tip 3 - protect potted plants:
You should also place all potted plants in a well-protected place in the garden, so that neither the plants nor the pots are damaged by strong storms (thunderstorms, hail, etc.). Covered outdoor parking spaces are well suited for this. You must also make sure that you also connect the potted plants to the automatic watering systemconnect.
➤ Tip 4 - Harvest fruit and vegetables earlier:
You can of course harvest many types of fruit and vegetables when they are still slightly unripe and then leave them to ripen indoors without any problems (e.g. tomatoes, apples, pears). Fruit and vegetables that perish quickly, such as berries, cucumbers, etc., should be given as gifts during longer vacation periods. Otherwise annoying fruit flies would spread in the house.
➤ Tip 5 - Tie down plants:
You should also tie many perennials, climbing plants and also fast or luxuriantly growing flower stalks to extra sticks or trellis so that they do not snap off during the holiday season.
