Grapes in the garden or on the balcony are often eaten by wasps. We reveal how you can effectively deter wasps.
When the grapes are ripe in late summer, you can look forward to a rich harvest. Usually the berries in your own garden are not enough to make wine from them. But they are always enough to eat them like this or to make jam and jelly. But only if they are not eaten by wasps first. So you have to protect the wine grapes from wasps. The sweet scent is of course a lure that wasps will not miss and damage the grapes with their sharp mandibles. Whole vines are often eaten bare. To prevent this, you should protect the grapes in good time, as early as possible.
How it works:
Simply put translucent bags over the vines and tie them at the top. This not only protects the grapes but also allows them to grow more evenly. In my case, so-called “organza bags” have proven their worth. They are very close-meshed and therefore ideal as protection against wasps. Can be ordered here.
Since this is of course a lot of hard work, you should only wrap the vines that you want to eat or process afterwards.
You can pick and eat the rest from time to time or leave it to the wasps. By the way: bees are also attracted to the grapes, but cannot bite the berries, they only suck on damaged areas.
