Planting Madonna Lilies

Madonna Lilies need full sun and a sheltered location. The soil should be nutrient-rich and permeable, but can also be calcareous and slightly stony - however, moist soil is not suitable for this type of lily, as the bulbs will then begin to rot.
» Plant:
You have to bury the bulbs of the Madonna lily in the garden in August. Here you should make sure that the tip of the onion is only slightly under the layer of soil.
Hint:
Amend the soil with compost before planting the flower bulbs! Alternatively, you can also add a complete fertilizer to the soil.
Caring for Madonna Lilies
» Antifreeze:
After planting, the Madonna lily usually sprout again profusely on particularly warm late summer days and autumn days,which is why you have to protect the flower from frost over the winter months with branches of brushwood.
» Support Madonna Lilies:
From spring onwards, the lily will continuously sprout up out of the ground. Due to its rapid growth and its impressive flowers (up to 20 pure white calyxes can form on just one flower stalk), the perennial needs a support in individual cases. Simply use a bamboo stick to which you loosely tie the Madonna lily. This protects the lily from snapping off even in strong gusts of wind.
» Water the Madonna Lilies:
On warm days and during longer periods of drought, you must water the lily moderately again and again. This should then be done several times a day if possible, because it does not tolerate any waterlogging - e.g. in the morning and in the evening. However, you should never water the Madonna lilies in hot sunlight (risk of burns) and always in the root area.
» pruning:
During flowering, you can pick off faded petals by hand. If the Madonna lily has completely faded, however, you should cut it off completely so that the bulb can immediately regain its strength.

If you want to plant the lily in a new location next year, you should remove the Madonna lily from the ground after cutting it off and plant it again in August.

Especially in spring, red beetles like to cavort on the leaves of the Madonna line, the so-called lily beetles, which are easy to recognize due to their intense colour. Since these beetles can cause enormous damage to the lily, you should either collect them by hand or, if necessary, remove them with a commercially available pesticide.
