Regular mowing is the be-all and end-all for lush green and well-groomed turf. Mistakes are often made, especially at the beginning.

Turf turf is becoming more and more popular with garden and property owners. No wonder, because in just a few hours a lush green lawn has emerged from the patch of earth. Just last year, my husband and I decided to put turf on our 120 square meter property. (Reading tip: Laying turf - Here's how) We were simply won over by the many advantages of turf. You can find all the advantages of rolled turf and a quality check of the providers at Ökotest.de.

The children were very happy. There were no barrier tapes like the neighboring children's, which forbid entering the lawn. Of course you should still be a bit careful with freshly laid turf, but the rules are much more relaxed.

Like a freshly sown lawn, but rolled turf also needs the right care. Instead of holes and gaps, the new lawn should thrive properly.

The first mowing

The lawn has been laid and we are still very happy about the new lawn. After a few days, however, the question then arises, "When is the turf actually mowed for the first time?" We also de alt with the question quite quickly. We did a lot of research and contacted our provider. After all, we didn't want to do anything wrong.

Here are our results:
Turf should be mowed as soon as it has grown. You can easily check this at the corners. It is important that the lawn already has a length of about 4 to 5 centimeters. With playing turf, the right time is already at 3.5 or 4 centimetres. If the weather is favourable, this can be the case after just a week.

The right lawnmower

Anyone who invests a lot of money in turf naturally wants it to be treated as well as possible. Since our old electric lawnmower gave up the ghost, we not only bought turf, but also a new lawnmower.

This time it had to be a petrol lawn mower. The annoying dragging of the cable, with our very crookedGarden, was just annoying. In the end, we chose the BRAST petrol lawn mower. Compared to other petrol mowers, this one is very cheap. The cutting width of 40 centimeters was also made for us. So now we can finally get through comfortably between the sandbox and the bed.

Regular mowing important

In the case of rolled turf, mowing should not be put off. It is important that you push the mower over the lawn at least once every 5 to 8 days. The grasses quickly form new side shoots, leaves and sprouts. This allows the lawn to compact itself optimally.

The interval between the individual mowing cycles also depends on the cutting length of the lawn. A length between 3 and 5 centimeters is normal. But it also depends on the usage. Playing turf should not be longer than 3 centimetres, shaded turf should be 4 centimeters long.

» Note: If turf is cut too short, new shoots may not form. This can easily cause holes and gaps in the lawn.

Even mowing too little is not good for the lawn. The coarser types of grass grow taller than the finer ones. By the time the lawn blooms, it's almost too late. After that, the lawn would die. So always mow regularly and you will enjoy your new lawn for a long time.

Care tips for rolled turf

✰ Fertilize turf 3 times a year

For a nice and dense result, not only mowing is enormously important. Adequate nutrient supply must also be guaranteed. Long-term lawn fertilizer is best suited for this. We have specifically opted for the high-quality Compo lawn fertilizer with a long-term effect. 4 kg, sufficient for 150 square meters, are available here for just under 16 euros.

The best times to fertilize are:

  • March/April
  • June/July
  • September

But fertilizer can only work when combined with water. So either wait for a rainy season or water well after fertilizing.

✰ Needs constant watering at start

Especially in the early days it is very important that you constantly water the new lawn. This is the only way for it to grow properly and thrive. Only when the lawn is properly rooted in the ground should you stop watering it consistently.

We kept our lawn permanently wet for 2.5 weeks. We moistened the lawn really well, especially in the early hours of the morning and late in the evening. ButCaution! No puddles should form. If the lawn gets too wet, the leaves start to rot. If you don't water enough, you risk a dry lawn.
