Dahlias can only be planted in the garden again from May. Before that, you should drive the dahlias forward. Read how to do this here.

Dahlias must be overwintered in a frost-free room every year and may only be planted outdoors again after the Ice Saints (mid/end of May). However, if you plant your dahlia bushes in a cool and light-flooded room from March, you will achieve more robustness and more lush flowering in the plants. You don't even have to worry as much about snail damage with advanced dahlias. It is therefore best to drive your dahlias forward as described below.

Force Dahlias

Potting Dahlias:

To propel them forward, you must plant the overwintered dahlias in a clay pot from March. But only use good substrate! Then you need to put the pots in a window, where the room temperature should not exceed 15 degrees. You should then only give the dahlias a little water while they are being pushed forward.

Relocate dahlias outdoors:

After the ice saints, you can move the dahlias that you have pushed out into the open ground as usual. Insert the respective tuber about 5 to 10 centimeters deep and, if possible, only water very little or not at all. Due to the projection, the first flowers form as early as June.

» Tip:

It is best to transplant the dahlias from the pots using the substrate that has already been used. Just put this in the planting hole.
