A garden without daisies? Hard to imagine, right? So here we tell you everything you need to know about growing and caring for daisies.
Who doesn't know that lovely daisy, which is frowned upon as a weed in some ornamental lawns. Unfortunately, the medicinal herb effect of the daisy has also been completely forgotten. For example, daisies treat digestive problems, stimulate appetite and relieve colds, both internally (in the form of tea) and externally (in the form of tinctures).
Today, the daisy is more available as seeds for the flower meadow or as a colorful mixed seed mix for the perennial bed, including filled calyx variants.
Daisies are perennial plants
Daisies are perennial plants that reproduce either by themselves or through pollination and can grow up to 15 centimeters in height. In addition to the conventional, white-flowered daisy, varieties ranging from a delicate rose to a deep dark red, including violet shades, are now also available. Sometimes even with filled calyxes and also in lush perennial form. Well-known cultivars include:
- blue or Australian daisies
- Strawberry Cream
- Daisies
- Habanera
- Rob Roy
The following explains in detail how all these daisy varieties are planted and cared for. You will also find recipe suggestions for processing daisies here.
Cultivation of daisies
➤ Location:
You can easily add the seeds of conventional daisies to any meadow grass mixture before sowing. Perennial daisies, on the other hand, should be planted either in perennial beds or in tubs or balcony boxes. The daisies harmonize particularly well with pansies and horned violets, but also with many other perennial plants!
➤ Sowing/Cultivation:
Scatter the seeds finely from June to July in a 1 cm deep burrow. Then cover the seed again with soil and water it a little.
Becoming many timesIn the meantime, larger potted plants for outdoors or for planting in tubs are now also available in specialist garden stores, especially from the double or dark-colored flowering daisies. You can use these robust plant sticks immediately. They usually grow without any problems.
Hint:
If the daisies you have sown yourself are too close together, you can thin them out again in autumn at any time by pulling them out individually and replanting them in another location. You should keep a planting distance of about 15 to 20 centimeters.
Caring for daisies properly
Some daisies sprout from the ground as early as the end of March, with the main flowering phase lasting from May to September, and even into October in mild climate zones. Daisies are extremely easy to care for, they:
- Only need a little water on dry days
- can also be cut off easily for the small flower vase
- can be divided in late summer (simply replant separated plants in a new location)
- must be supplied with a little fertilizer in the form of a complete fertilizer or compost once or twice a year
Recipe suggestions for daisies
» Suggestion 1 - use daisies as decoration:
Daisies can be used in a variety of recipes because they have a delicious, slightly nutty taste. You can therefore use the daisies to decorate dishes. Our tip: Dip the daisies in a sugar solution. You can then use the flowers to decorate cakes or desserts.
» Suggestion 2 - Add daisies to tea/butter/jellies/salads:
You can also make a tea from daisies or add the flowers to a herbal vinegar mixture. You can also add daisies to salads or use them in jellies, butter and the like. These are great ideas for homemade gifts from the garden, aren't they?
