When you hear about the spider flower for the first time, you may cringe a little. But this is a very pretty flower.
The spider flower, which looks quite exotic at first glance, enchants every gardener with its impressive blossoms, whose protruding stamens are reminiscent of thin spider legs. Due to its sensitivity to cold, the plant, which comes from South America, can only be cultivated in our gardens as an annual.
Plant Spider Flower
The spider flower, which grows up to 120 centimeters tall, loves a wind-protected, full sun location and is ideal as a background plant in a perennial border. Whereby she always prefers soil that is as nutrient-rich as possible.
Hint:
Enrich the soil with compost beforehand, this will make it much easier for the spider flower to grow.
You must note that the spider flower can only be brought outdoors after the ice saints, as it does not tolerate temperatures below -5 degrees. You should also keep a planting distance of at least 30 centimeters to other perennials.
From June to October, the basically easy-care spider flower then unfolds its wonderful blossom splendor, whereby it is offered with white, red, pink and purple-colored flowers in well-stocked garden shops.
Hint:
The spider flower produces enough seeds in autumn that you can collect and dry in order to grow them again next spring (possible as early as February on the window sill).
Caring for spider flowers properly
» casting:
Since the spider flower clearly prefers nutrient-rich soil, you must also water it regularly during longer periods of drought.
» Fertilize:
In the open field, spider flowers should also be supplied with a high-quality liquid fertilizer about every 3 weeks.
» Fight pests:
Every now and then spider flowers are infested by aphids, but a strong water shower helps. If this is not the case, you should fight the aphids as quickly as possible with appropriate insecticides, otherwise the flowers will suffer.
