Creating an allotment garden is easier said than done, which is why you should definitely follow our 5 tips. This will turn your small garden into a true oasis of well-being.
In a small but extremely idyllic allotment garden, the various basic needs of the owner/user should always be taken into account.
Our tips are intended to ensure that nothing is missing in your allotment garden and that you can ultimately feel completely comfortable there.
Creating an allotment garden - 5 important tips
Tip 1 - privacy protection:
Ideally, all allotment facilities should have sufficient privacy from the neighboring gardens. However, you should definitely observe the facility regulations.
Such a privacy screen can, for example, extend over a hedge around the garden plot, as well as over a pergola on the garden shed, which can grow in with colorful climbing plants (e.g. clematis, ivy, vine tendrils, hops, etc.) to provide shade.
Tip 2 - Sidewalks:
Even if allotment gardens are relatively small, you should plan for sufficient footpaths. For example, you can pave the path from the garden entrance to the gazebo, but also the path to the barbecue area, to the equipment store or to a sandpit.
It is best to use stepping stones or conventional paving stones for these walkways so that rainwater can run off easily. Alternatively, you can of course also use lawn grids for this purpose.
Tip 3 - Water:
Water is one of the most important elements of the allotment garden, which is why its provision can be represented in many different ways:
- Fountain in the allotment garden
- Drinking water access
- Rain Butt
- Garden pond - swimming pool
To water the plants, it is sufficient if you use rainwater or well water - insofar as separate wells are approved in the respective allotment. Because this low-lime water is very well suited for plant care.
For the human supply, drinking water access in the allotment is of course necessary. Some facilities provide a water connection per plot, othersagain only have a communal supply.
Small garden ponds and pools often have to be refilled or the water has to be exchanged. You should therefore always clarify in advance with the allotment management how the high water consumption can be managed.
Tip 4 - Electrical connection:
Nowadays, an allotment garden must also have an electrical connection. Just to ensure adequate lighting of the garden in the evening/night hours. And of course the main paths in your garden should always be adequately lit - similar to public street lighting.
And of course you also need electricity for various electrical devices in your allotment garden, such as the electric lawn mower, the coffee machine, etc. In addition, electricity makes it much easier to do many trades in the allotment garden.
Tip 5 - Plant selection:
The choice of plants in the allotment garden should always be considered carefully. In the first place, it is recommended to use native, robust plants that are as easy to care for as possible, which can also be left alone in the garden for a few days. Because many allotment garden owners can usually only take care of the garden maintenance on the weekends.
Important: The same applies to all fruit plants and vegetable plants as well as to the herb garden.
