Plant rings are not only very decorative - they can also be used to attach a slope wonderfully. We'll show you how.

While a sloping garden is beautiful to look at, it also presents some problems. If this is not worked, the rain washes away the unpaved ground. And if it wants to be worked on, many gardeners often lack the ideas. Designing a slope is not really as easy as creating a garden bed. A little more creativity and manual skills are required here.

In principle, you can design the slope in different ways. For example with gabions, with palisades, with a natural stone wall or with a concrete wall (further creative ideas at www.minimalisti.com). If, on the other hand, you want to beautify the slope with plants, we recommend that you attach them with plant rings. This is relatively easy and also looks absolutely beautiful when the plants are in bloom. The instructions below show you how to do this.

You will need:

• Planting Rings
• Horticultural Concrete
• Gravel
• Garden Soil
• Wheelbarrow• Spade
• Shovel
• Tape Measure
• String• Board
• Spirit Level
• Concrete Stake
• Rubber Mallet

Instructions for attaching a slope with plant rings

» Step 1:

In order to determine the direction of the foundation, you must first stretch a cord.

» Step 2:

Plant rings are usually 40 centimeters high and should disappear about halfway into the ground in the bottom row. So now you have to dig a trench 40 centimeters deep and 50 centimeters wide along the line.

» Step 3:

Now you need to fill the trench with a layer of antifreeze. This layer should consist of coarse gravel and be compacted to about 20 centimeters with a concrete rammer.

This layer should be as even as possible, because then the planting rings can be aligned more easily later. So the best thing to do is take a board, place it on the frost protection layer and use a spirit level to check the slope.

» Step 4:

Then a 10 centimeter thick layer should be madefollow earth-moist concrete. However, only pour in as much concrete as you can place plant rings, because the concrete must always be wet.

» Step 5:

Now press in the plant rings one after the other along the stretched cord. You should keep a joint distance of 5 millimeters between the stones. Then carefully tap the stones into the concrete layer with a rubber mallet and align them with the spirit level.

» Step 6:

So that the water cannot accumulate later, you should also provide the edge of the plant stones with drainage grooves. To do this, simply wait until the concrete has hardened a little, then it will work better.

» Step 7:

Now level out the gap on the slope side with coarse gravel and spread some concrete mixture on top. The second row of plant rings can then find its place on this mixture. You should now proceed row by row until the desired height is reached.

» Step 8:

Now fill the individual plant rings 1/3 with sand. Then there is a layer of garden soil (reading tip: Buy garden soil - 5 tips), which should go to the edge of the stones. Then you can plant the stones according to your taste.

Important: Always secure the construction site

If the slope is a bit larger, the construction work usually takes a while. If this is on the street side, you must secure it so that children, for example, do not romp around on it and destroy the previous construction progress or injure themselves. It is best to cordon off the construction site using one of the following options:

  • Barrier Tape/Barrier Chains
  • Barrier Fence
  • Warning sign/Warning cone

All of these options are available at www.seton.de, for example. Here you will find barriers and displays for a variety of different areas of application, which either comply with the central standards or can even be printed individually. You can even have barrier tape printed with your desired text. So you no longer have to worry about someone getting injured on your construction site and you then having to answer for it.
