Have you always wanted to propagate your rhododendron? It's not difficult at all. We'll show you how to do it.
Rhododendrons, which can grow several meters in height, fascinate in the spring with their magnificent flowers ranging from white to red. If you want to have them in your garden, you can either buy them or simply propagate them yourself. It's not that hard.Propagating rhododendrons - step by step
Step 1
To propagate the rhododendron from a cutting, take a shoot from a rhododendron bush and use a knife to cut a slanting notch in the wood about 15 to 20 centimeters below the leaves. Be careful not to cut through the shoot. It must remain on the plant and the notch must be open as this is where roots will form.
Tip: You can stick a small piece of wood in the notch.
Step 2
Now dig the cutting site at least two inches into the ground and support the cutting with a stake.
Step 3
Sufficient roots will have formed next spring. Now the new plant is separated from the mother plant - for example with a shovel. However, be careful not to damage the young roots.
Step 4
If you have separated the offshoot from the mother plant, you can plant the newly acquired rhododendron. Remember that rhododendrons prefer partial shade. Then water it vigorously and provide it with fertilizer.
