In order for your oleander to survive the winter unscathed, the nerium must hibernate in a cool room. You can read about the necessary preparations here.

Oleander is not hardy

What temperatures does oleander tolerate?
The oleander tolerates light frost, down to minus 5 degrees Celsius, without damage.

Like most plants or pot plants from the Mediterranean region, the beautiful oleander (Nerium oleander) also tolerates a bit of frost. However, the oleander is not hardy, which is why you should bring it inside in winter. And this is where some make a big mistake. Because they put the oleander in the living room or in the heated conservatory. The temperatures there are around 20 or 25 degrees. And that is harmful to oleanders in winter.

What problems can occur?

At temperatures above 15 degrees, scale insects can appear, which damage the plant. But that's not all. Everyone knows that sometimes you forget to water your plants. However, if the oleander is kept too dry, another pest can spread - the spider mite. You should therefore observe the following tips in winter so that your oleander survives this well.

Overwintering oleanders correctly - step by step

  1. Check that your Nerium isn't already infested with pests.
  2. Are there weeds in the bucket? Remove before wintering.
  3. Choose a bright, cool location.
  4. If you want your oleander to overwinter in the basement or another dark room, it must not be too warm.
  5. Temperatures between 2 and 10 degrees Celsius are ideal.
  6. Air the winter quarters regularly.
  7. The oleander only needs to be watered a little in winter to prevent the root ball from drying out.

Nerium oleander can grow up to three meters high and also be very wide. If you own such a specimen, it is advisable to prune the oleander before moving to winter quarters. However, if there is enough space to overwinter, postpone this measure until the following spring.
